I have a Medela Pump In Style. My son is 15 days old. I am only pumping .5-.75 ounces per side, so about 1-1.5 ounces in total per 12-15 session. Can someone please tell me if this is "normal'? How much do you pump per side? I feel like LO feeds really frequently...but he is a newborn, so I expect that, of course. However, I just read that someone pumps about 4 ounces per session (both sides) and now I am wondering if I am having supply issues?
Also, I'd love to have a stash for when I go back to work, but feel that pumping only 1-1.5 ounces at a time won't really help me with that.
Thank you for your help!
Re: How many ounces do you pump in one sitting?
That sounds normal if you're pumping after a feeding. You might try waiting a little bit after a feeding to pump so your supply can replenish a bit more. Also, you generally will make more milk earlier in the morning than later on in the day.
When LO has growth spurts, he'll eat constantly and that tells your body to make more milk. When I first started pumping I barely got anything, now I get 2.5 to 3.5 ounces when I pump.
Also, your LO is probably getting more than .75 ounces when he's eating. Obviously it's hard to tell how much they get since you can't measure it. So I wouldn't worry that you have a low supply unless he's not gaining weight or making enough wet/dirty diapers.
Just hang in there, you'll see over time that your supply will increase to meet his demands.

After the first feeding of the day I pump 2 oz off the side DD fed off of and 6 oz off the other for 8 oz total. A few times its been as much as 10 oz or as little as 6 oz.
Edit: I forgot to add that it took a month to get there. In the beginning it was much less. You're fine!
Hi Irish Bride - I have been pumping instead of feedings. Today, LO was screaming and I had just fed him. I didn't think he was getting anything and he is still below his birth weight. So, I had fed him some formula we had at the hospital and was pumping to make up for that feeding. Then, 2 hours later, I pumped again (he was sleeping) so I could signal my body to get moving on that milk production!
Tomorrow, I think I will try to pump after feedings to increase the supply. But, this is challenging b/c I am with him by myself during the day.
I pump in place of half of my daily feedings so I generally get a good amount. I get between 5 and 7 oz at each pumping session (4-5 oz. from the right breast and 2-3 oz from the left breast). I freeze 4-5 oz a day and then keep the rest in bottles in the fridge to use for the bottle feedings.
It's definitely not unusual to only pump 1-1.5 oz. in one session if you are doing your pumping after feedings and not in place of them.
My DS is 11 days old and I pump about an hour after feedings. I usually get about 1.5 oz from each breast, so 3 oz total, which I am freezing for use when DH and I go out and my mom or his mom watches the baby.
