Can diaper rash be on the penis?

My LO has some redness on his hiney and whenever this happens I'll put some diaper rash cream on it and it is gone by the next diaper change.  For the past few days he's had a little bit of redness on his penis (not the tip, but the skin around the tip).  I asked my DH and he said that's "normal".  I figure he'd know because he's a man, but I don't think it's quite normal and wondering if you can get diaper rash on there and if it's safe to put cream on it?  I will probably end up calling the doctor tomorrow anyway if it's not gone but wanted to get your thoughts in the meantime.

    'What to expect the first year' says that they can get diaper rash on the penis. It's ok to use a cream on it. Hope that helps...

    My boy gets red there too sometimes and DH always says it's normal.

    it can be anywhere that's exposed to diaper... penis, testes, hiney, waist, thighs.  It's fine to use creams (externally) anywhere you see rash.

    Thank you!  I'll try a little cream on it next diaper change and hopefully that will help!
