Is it true ur not supposed to cross legs or sit with them under u?

I was at work sitting with my leg underneath me and worker came and told me to stop that ur not supposed to sit like that or legs crossed when pregnant. She said her doctor told her that when she was pregnant.

I was comfortable and felt fine and didn;t see what the problem would be. Anyone heard of this?

  • I read somewhere that if you are experiencing swelling it is best to not sit with your legs crossed.  But if you are comfortable I would continue to sit that way, you aren't causing any harm

  • You're more at risk for getting DVT or varicous veins while PG, so that's probably why your co-worker said that.  Your leg will fall asleep and let you know when you need to change your position.

  • I heard it has something to do with circulation and varicose veins???

My dr. has not mentioned it to me.

  • Posterior babies (when the baby is faces down, but is towards the mom's front instead of her back) may or may not be influenced by their mom's posture and sitting positions...it's harder to push out a posterior baby in labor (or not at all, in my case - argh).

This blog has a post about it: https://tinacassidy.blogspot.com/2008/01/our-new-baby-installment-16.html

And a good site about positioning: https://www.spinningbabies.com/more-info/maternal-positioning

    From the site:

Some helpful maternal positions in pregnancy are:

    • Sitting with your hips higher than your knees
    • Sitting with your back straight and your rib cage lifted off your middle
    • Sitting on a firm exercise ball that allows your hips to be level with your knees or higher than your knees
    • Laying with your navel aiming towards the bed, floor or couch/ sofa, if not directly on your belly, then so that eventually an imagined light-beam coming from your navel would eventually find the floor
    • Brief forward-leaning inversions, once a day
    • Squatting or supported squatting with your back flat against the wall and your knees bent (work gradually up to where you can squat with your feet flat on the floor for 2-5 minutes)
    • Holding your shoulders back, yet relaxed, while you walk briskly

  • I've heard you're not supposed to while PG to avoid vein problems but I can't seem to break the habit. I'm sitting cross legged right now.
  • I sit with my legs crossed and have vericose veins so if it would have stopped vericose veins, I would definately uncross my legs.
  • I had never heard of this before now.  I sit with my legs crossed or underneath me all the time and I've not had any problems.

  • It can increase swelling and increase your chance of varicose veins. Try not to do it but you won't die if you do.  Also make sure you're are getting up and changing positions to help with swelling and blood flow
