Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

do you always have to get a D&C?

I have an appointment this afternoon to FINALLY determine whether or not I had a miscarriage.  I was only 5 weeks when the bleeding starting and today marks two weeks.  Will I have to get a D&C or was it early enough to not have to worry about?  Excuse my ignorance, I have no clue.

Re: do you always have to get a D&C?

  • After a certain amount of time it's recommended to reduce the chance of infection.

Both my m/cs have been natural (at home). You can also get a shot or some sort of medication to help induce the m/c.

  • I'm sorry for what you are going through. I had a D&C because the baby had stopped growing but had not passed on its own, and it had been close to 2 weeks since it stopped growing- so like PP said, there is a risk of infection at that point. I was given the option of waiting it out and seeing what happened naturally but was not comfortable w/ the waiting game- I just wanted it over with. Good luck at your appt.today.

  • I was almost 7 weeks along and my Doc just wanted to wait and see. The bleeding last about a week and a half almost 3 weeks after the start of the bleeding i went into to see my doc and she said that everything was fine there was no sign of anything wrong so i didnt need to D&C. She said since i was not to far along it my body just took care of it on its own. I never got an answer why it happen which sucks cause i wish i had some kind of answers!
  • I had a natural m/c. It had already started by the time I went to the doc and she said I could let my body do the rest on it's own to avoid surgery.

    It did thankfully.

  • I had a D+C both times because when we discovered I mc, turns out it was a missed m/c. Especially the first time (blited ovum) I don't think I was going to do it naturally.

This time I might've but I really wanted them to do testing on the tissue. I was already having a hard time emotionally,

Also I feel like a D+C is better because it's supposed to clean you out, where a natural m/c, you might have some tissue not dispose and it can cause problems in future pregnancies.
