Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 months and still not taking a bottle...

I am staying home with LO so it really hasn't been an issue so far but I'm getting to the point where I need a break and she needs to be fed by DH and others.  What should I do?  How should I push her to take the bottle or do I?

(I know, you must be shaking your head at me.  I can't believe that I've let it go on this long as well.  I guess it's just easier to not fight with her and I'm such a softy when it comes to her.  I hate to see her cry.)

Re: 4 months and still not taking a bottle...

  • Well all I have to say is if you think 4 months is bad try 5 months.. Logan will take a bottle only when one of us sits there for like 10 minutes trying to get him to take it. When DH has him at night he will literally just go to bed without eating b/c DH will try to feed him and he just goes to sleep instead. Sigh....

  • how about DD took a bottle from 3 weeks old until a few weeks ago, we are giving it a break and then will try again.

  • It might help if you leave the house and have your DH try while you're not there.  The bottle may be more appealing if there is no alternative in sight and you won't be tempted to give in when you hear your LO crying.  She might not like it, but if she's really hungry chances are she'll take the bottle when she knows you're not there to give her the breast.  We recently started trying to give my DS a bottle on a more regular basis because my mom came to visit and he wouldn't take a bottle from her.  I find it goes better if I'm not in the room when DH gives him the bottle.
  • My LO is 5 months and still not taking one.  Unfortunately, I work, and he goes to a sitter.  She is constantly trying to get him to eat, but he only eats about 5-8 oz the whole 8 hours I'm gone!  He'll eat just enough so that he's not starving.  It's so frustrating because he wants to nurse all evening to make up for it.  Anyways, no advice; just sympathy.

  • I'm right there with you, but I'm not too worried about it, I figured it one less thing to ween her off of... and yes at times its VERY demanding, and very stressful on me, but I know I'll miss every second of it when she grows up. I'm hoping when we start solids and get her use to a spoon, a bottle might be easier for her to get use to, if not then we'll just stick to me breastfeeding. GL.

    I agree with this. :)

  • I finally got DD to take one last week right before returning to work by sitting her in her bouncy seat, in front of the TV with cartoons on (this helped entertain DS while I tried as well).

Then I put in her pacifier, and then slowly popped it out.  Then I would put the bottle nipple in as if it were a paci and let her suck it for a bit.  (Not too long so she didn't inhale a lot of air).  Then I would put a tiny bit of BM into the bottle nipple and let her drink it like that.  Finally, I put the whole the bottle in.

I also bought a bottle nipple that is the same shape as her paci.  She also seemed to prefer the latex nipples, they are a bit softer and feel more like my skin I think????  I would just touch the nipple to her bottom lip, and let her  open her mouth to take it instead of forcing it in.

It took her about 40 min to take the first bottle, but now she takes them in 10-15 min from MIL while I am at work.  It took a lot of patience and practice.  But after 2 days of doing this she started taking the bottle. Good luck, I know it is really frustrating.
