Does everyone do this before the baby is born? I'm a little worried that I would take tags off newborn clothes and wash them, and then have a huge baby who would never wear them. Then again, I don't want to HAVE to do tons of laundry as soon as I get home from the hospital.

I believe the idea behind washing them is because people will try it on the LO, and if it doesn't fit they return it...so if that happened 3 times, 3 different babies have worn that one outfit.
IMO, Its not worth washing them all ahead of time. If you plan out what LO is going to wear that week, you can easily try on outfits, wash what needs to be washed, and return anything s/he has grown out of.

I washed all of mine b/c I really don't have that many clothes anyway since we don't know if we're having a boy or girl. I bought maybe 2 packs of onesies in NB size and a few sleep n plays.
I have more 0-3 mo. stuff and I also washed that...even if I have a big baby from day one, he/she will probably fit into the 0-3 size.
I washed many things, but mostly just the newborn size stuff and some 0-3 before baby's arrival, along with bedding and blankets. The rest waited til after.
And now that she's almost 2? Not so much.
This time around we actually have very little in the way of clothes for DS so I just washed everything in one load. Of that, very few things are NB and all of those NB things are Carter's (proper) so I know they run big and will fit up to a 10ish lb baby just fine should he be that big.
With DD I only washed her NB coming home outfit and all of her 0-3 stuff. Turned out she fit into all Carter's NB for almost 2mos (and had already sized out of every other brand's NB) so I just washed the outfits when I got home. No biggie, she loved to hang out in the Carter's sleep gowns most anyway so fit was not such a big deal
