3rd Trimester

anyone's std claim been denied?

My ob told me they would write me out on STD at 36 wks. I stopped work last Friday. Got a call message from my company's STD insurance carrier and they said they needed additional info from my doctor because they only allow 2 wks before EDD. They said needed me to tell them exactly why my doctor is putting me out. I have not called them back because I was not sure what exactly to say. I called the doctor and am waiting for a call back from the insurance person to find out what I should say and to speak to them about the paperwork.

I have not had an easy preg, lots of back and rib pain and also  I am having a difficult time walking. My doctor said to me at 34 weeks they would write me out, but I said I would try to hang in until 36 since this is what I planned with my manager.

The first call I got from the insurance company was yesterday, which was my first day of not working. I don't understand why the insurance company would wait until after I went out to get the paperwork, but I've heard this is typical

Just wondering if anyone's disability before 38 weeks had been denied? If so what do you do?... go back to work until it gets approved?

  • I haven't gone out on leave yet, but I'm worried the same thing will happen to me.  I spoke to HR about it, they said that your doctor has to give a medical reason for you to stop working ("Maternity leave" isn't enough and the insurance company would deny it).  So hopefully it's as simple as that.  Good luck!

  • Well it probably got denied b/c back pain & trouble walking are completely normal at the end of a pregnancy.  Those are not medical reasons to stop working.  I am not surprised it got denied.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • To me, that just means you need a note from your doctor, which most doctors are more than willing to provide. They would rather you stay home and take it easy anyways. Good luck!

Unless she's required to be active and on her feet all day. Yes, it's normal, but if it's not conducive to her job, it's a big issue.

I am not active at work, so I plan to work right until the end, but my Sister is an OT. She'd definitely need to get out early if she had difficulty walking--she lifts people for a living! Disability policies are based on your ability to do your job. Just because trouble walking can be common doesn't mean it's reason for her to continue working--we don't know what she does.

OP, a note from the doctor should solve it. And frankly, I'd be cautious about what you say, because they'd use any slip-up against you.

  • Mine was originally denied and then my doctor filled out a much more detailed letter and it was approved. I think you just need to make sure the doctor is really detailed. For example, I am sure there is a fancy medical term and medical code for back and rib pain due to the position of the baby. My doctor also wrote on my form that I need to limit trips outside of the house and rest off my feet for at least 4 to 6 hours a day. After he added all that detail, it was finally approved.
  • Definitely don't talk to anyone until you hear from your doctor.

I was taken out of work at 29 weeks.  My doctor's reason on the form was "pregnancy, twins" and "contractions."  I had no issues.

  • well if back pain and rib pain gets me out of work from 36wks on, why has no one come to get my kids and take them for the past 3 weeks?

  • It does not sound like you are truly disabled, just pregnant. Back pain and feeling uncomfortable is a normal part of pregnancy and does not qualify for short term disability. People that are put out of work early have things like preterm labor with bedrest or severe pre-eclampsia, etc.. They did not say you could not stay home, but you do not qualify for payment. Short term disability has set-up guidleines that are fair for all pregnanct women It sounds like you need to wait until 38 weeks pregnant to collect benefits.
  • Insurance companies do not want to pay out unless its necessary.  It sounds like you need to get your doctor to provide additional information.  I had my claim for 8 weeks (due to a c-section) denied last time, they just needed additional information from the doc to process the additional 2 weeks.

    Good Luck
