being ignorant- but whats viability?

I noticed on the poll posted by beebe ,LCB and Alissa mentioned about viability check at 24+ weeks. Is it a test like tha anatomy? At how many weeks is it usually done? My OB has called me in at 24 weeks for a GD test and regular cervix length monitoring. They never mentioned the word "viability". Sorry for being ignorant ,but a google search didnt lead to any relevant results.

 TIA!

Re: being ignorant- but whats viability?

  • A baby born at or past 24 weeks has a chance of survival outside of the womb. Prior to 24 weeks if a baby is born they won't take measures to save it. Starting at 24 weeks, they will place them in the NICU and use all measures because they are viable for life.

  • 24 weeks is the point at which the baby is viable, ie.  has a fair chance to survive if it's born.

  • Nope, no test is needed.

Viability is the term that describes when a baby can live outside of the womb.  At 24 wks, it is 50% - the 'edge' of viability.  You can search on viability and fetus and you will get some info.  At 28wks, it is 90%.  Before 24wks, they sometimes don't try to revive babies because even the ones who survive the birth may have long term issues.

Drs don't talk about this, but ppl (like me) who have high risk issues look forward to the date where the drs will intervene if your baby was a premature baby (forget the name for really premature).

  • thank you! I had kinda read about this and thought it was after 28 weeks. Didn't know it is what "viability" meant! thanks again

Yeah I think it is micropremie -24wks - 33wks or something like that - extremely premature!
  • I actually had no idea what this was until the bump!
