1st Trimester

eating bad, but not on purpose....

so i'm normally a healthy eater, love salads, chicken, veggies ect..... but for the past 3 wks my nausea has kept me from eating anything relatively good for you, even on ZOFRAN. Theres days when all i can stomach is ramen noodles or pop tarts, or just random junk food. Im scared that im going to gain bad weight and that im not eating properly for baby, but NOTHING seems good to me anymore.

Anyone else eating really bad do to nausea?

I cant wait for 2nd trimester to roll around so that i can try to get my eating under control, and hopefully this devil nausea goes away.

Re: eating bad, but not on purpose....

  • I am normally not a healthy eater, but with my first pregnancy, I tried my hardest while I was feeling good.  Uh, yeah, that lasted 2 weeks, lol.  I honestly just ate what I could.  I ate tons of carbs and whatever I could tolerate cuz I was sick the entire pregnancy.  My midwife has even told me this time around to just eat what I can.  GL!

  • YES!  You are not alone.  Glad to know I'm not the only one.  I used to make a salad with my own yogurt made with honey & fruit for lunch everyday.  Eat veggies every night for dinner and rarely ate carbs.  Now, I can't stand the thought of cooked veggies, but the good news is...over the last week, I have realized I really like food cold.  So fresh salads and cucumbers with ranch have worked and I am ok with yogurt, just not my "homemade" kind just yet.  I still start out the morning with a whole grain cereal.  If carbs make you feel better, like they do me, try to stick with whole grain.  I do miss cooking and feel guilty that I am eating out more and working out less, but remember it's only temporary.
  • Eating something is better than eating nothing.Just make sure you are taking your prenatals and hopefully the nausea will pass soon.I know with my #2, I ate waffles ALL the time during the first tri, and only ended up gaining 12-15 lbs total, 8 of it in the first tri.You gotta eat what you can stomach.Just try to stay active if you are worried about too much weight gain.
  • My girlfriend was in a similar situation during her first trimester. She was usually such a healthy eater but as soon as she stared to feel sick she could only eat certain things and they usually were not healthy.

As for worrying about eating healthy... eat what you can right now. Baby will be ok!  I know its not ideal but it will balance out in the second tri. I know it isn't easy letting go of your usually eating habits. I'm struggling with this myself. However we have to keep in mind that this too will pass and as soon as these next few weeks are gone you will probably feel better and can readjust your eating.

  • I have been eating terrible, too. I normally don't. I usually never drink pop or eat sweets, but lately I have craved 7UP and cookies.

thanks! i sure hope i get back to normal quick because this nauseated feeling has even kept me from working out, which is something i do religiously lol. My DH is a personal trainer and theres days when he asks if i wanna even go for a walk around our lake, and i just look at him with what he calls my "puky face" lol.

  • I'm in the same boat.  We are really healthy eaters - lean meats, lots of seafood, veggies, salads, all whole grains and NONE of that is appealing right now.  i want carbs and junk.  I worry about not getting enough nutrients and i was worried about the weight gain until i realized i've lost 2 lb because my portions have gotten so much smaller.  I'm counting down for 2nd tri, too.  It's so nice to know i'm not alone!!  Good luck!

  • You are definitely not alone.  During my first trimester (I just moved into the 2nd but still find this board helpful), I couldn't handle much protein.  I ate instant grits, instant mashed potatoes, ramen noodles, pretzels, and if I felt good enough, fries.  I did eat apples a lot and only drank water or a little ginger ale if I threw up.  I actually didn't gain a single ounce the first trimester and have just started gaining marginally this week.  I think it had more to do with quantity and throwing up than quality of what I was eating.  Now that I am in the 2nd trimester, I have been able to eat more and lots of good stuff - more fruit, greek yogurt smoothies, yogurt, salads, homemade vegetable soup, chicken, and more quantity.  It's been awesome!  All I can say is don't worry, 2nd trimester is coming. :)

  • oh same here.....it is hard to get over this horrible new me, where i eat chips and munchkins and bagels instead of broccoli, salads and lean meats......which sicken me!!!!

    clearly, it is normal!

  • I'm normally a fairly healthy eater (due to many, many food allergies) but I have found myself craving the few "junk" things that I CAN eat... and have been indulging in them! I do worry about my weight gain, as I gained 50 pounds when pregnant with DD... but I just need to learn more self-control.

  • I normally eat pretty healthy, since about week 5 I started a meat and veggie aversion.  I have since been eating junk food.  I'm trying to steady out the bad calories with swimming and walking.  I have slowly been reintroducing things back into my diet.  So far, iceberg lettuce, steak, and sausage.  Only if the sausage is in biscuits and gravy though!   I'm hoping that within the next couple of weeks I will once again enjoy seafood and chicken.  Until then, I'm going to attempt to eat healthy but am not going to try to worry about it.  If the only thing I can stomach is a bowl of corn pops than it's better than nothing.

  • I'm so glad you posted this.  DH and I are normally really healthy eaters (lean meats, fish, veggies, whole grains etc), but I've been so unbelievably sick that I can't eat anything but crackers.  I feel bad for not eating like I know I should, but if I can't keep down the "right" foods, then what can I do?

Today I forced down baby carrots, watermelon and cranberry juice and felt like heaving all day. Then, I ate 3 Oreos (VERY unusual for me) and I feel sooooo freakin' good! I texted DH and told him that Oreos are an anti-nausea miracle in a bag!  :)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one going way off their usual healthy diet. That helps with the guilt and fear of exessive weight gain.

This, 1000 times over. In our pantry, we currently have Cocoa Krispies, Kix, Cinnamon Life, and Frosted Flakes. Yeah, that's a lot of cereal for two people and a baby to have in their cupboard. : )
