BM in sippy?

Why won't he take BM from a sippy cup?

We've been giving a sippy of water at 'mealtime' and he enjoys it.  He still isn't great with it, but he has fun and does drink a bit.  I think he's about to officially drop a nursing session for the first time since 3 months which would leave us at 4 nursing and 2 meals a day.  I still want to make sure he's getting enough BM so I put some in his sippy instead of the water.  I figured this would also be good practice b/c eventually we'll give whole milk in the cup.

Well he won't take it.  Pushes the sippy over and ignores it.  If I try and give him a sip, he'll take a bit, but then gags and sputters.  He's taken BM from bottles perfectly from the very first bottle, but not from the cup.

Anyone else have this?  Does it just take practice?  Should I not worry about it and assume he'll get all the BM he needs from nursing?

I'm not all that upset, just a little perplexed.

Re: BM in sippy?

  • I fear this sort of. I think he might be rejecting it b/c boobs or bottles are for milk (in his mind) and the sippy is for water only. I started thinking about this the other day. DS is still TERRIBLE at getting anything out of the sippy without our help (he doesn't lift it high enough) and I'm thinking "what are we going to do past one year if we want to start transitioning to milk? stick it in a bottle still?"

I think if you keep offering the sippy with bm he'll adjust. You're braver than I - I won't put bm in the sippy yet b/c I think I'll cry if I have to throw it out. (Pumping at work and going through a constantly dwindling freezer stash makes me paranoid and overly attached to the hard earned pumped milk.) I'm thinking about switching to straw cups and seeing if he does any better with that since he sucks on the sippy spout just fine, but doesn't tip it to get the liquid.

Not that brave - I stay at home and rarely use my stash.  It started with a bottle I thawed for my dad to give but he didn't.  I don't usually give bottles when I'm around so we decided to give it a whirl in the sippy.  I've tried a few other times, but I am getting a little tired of wasting the BM!

That's a good idea about the straw cup - Drew's not the greatest at tipping the sippy back either.

p.s.  Thanks for responding, at1stsight.  I always appreciate your replies.  You're so articulate and give great advice!

  • Right back at ya! Too bad we don't live anywhere near each other - you seem like a person I'd totally hang out with IRL.
