Attachment Parenting

Anyone make their own Mei Tai?

I am new to the bump, and I guess you would call me a lurker on your boards. I am starting to think some of the attachment parenting ideas are really great. I am currently doing CDing, wanting to EBF, BLW, and some BWing. So any advice will be welcomed!

I am curious is making my own Mei Tai. I have found a few patterns for them online and really want to go get the stuff today. I have already made a sling, and a ring sling, I just think the Mei Tai will be my first choice as I already have two little ones running around.

Also is it as comfortable as it looks on the pictures? and is it easy to use for newborns?

Re: Anyone make their own Mei Tai?

  • I made on about 6 or so months ago. It was pretty simple. I bought the fabric at Joanns - I think I got a twill for the body/straps and a home dec fabric for the decorative front panel of the body. It was pretty easy and turned out to very comfy. J isn't a huge fan of being worn anymore, but it's the carrier I keep in the car we don't use very frequently, so if I happen to be out and about with him and forget my Pikkolo, we can pop into the library for a minute, or hit the farmer's market - places that I don't want to take the stroller, but where he can't walk yet.

Go to thebabywearer.com and look for the "Do it yourself" board. There are tons of ideas on how to make your own carriers and links to different tutorials. That's where I found the pattern/tutorial for mine.

  • I have a mei tai and a moby (both homemade) and at this age (eight weeks), I still prefer the moby. The moby is softer and the stretch fabric gives such a great gentle bounce and knocks her right out when she is sleepy. I also made the mei tai a little bigger so I could use it for a couple years but she can't see out of it yet so she is happier in the moby. I also think that she is more comfortable with her legs dangling in the moby than in the newborn "froggy" position in the mei tai, but that just might be personal preference due to her chubby little thighs :). My mei tai is definitely prettier and more of a crowd pleaser and is fun to wear out so I think I will like it more as she gets older. Both styles are really comfortable if worn correctly, just make sure you don't skip the padding in the mei tai straps. Hope that helps!

  • I made my own mei tai.  I used the sleepingbaby.net instructions and the scandi mei tai instructions (also online) and just mixed and matched.  I used twill for the straps, home decor fabric for one side + the inner security layer (what the straps are attached to) and a college football print for the other side (so my DH will babywear too!).  I also suggest doing padded straps.  I love mine and it is really comfy (for me and DD), though putting baby in a back carry solo has a bit of a learning curve and people really think you are crazy when you do it in a parking lot or a store.  I had a woman come over the other day to "help" and all she did was make me nervous and mess up the tie so that I had to do it over again.  Here's a pic of DD and I dancing in ours:

  • I didn't make my own Mei Tai, but I have one and love it. I have a woven wrap too. The Mei Tai is way easier for me to get on!

  • I've never made my own mei tei, but I own a Baby Hawk. We didn't get it until DS was older. I personally prefer a stretchy wrap for newborns.
