Babies: 9 - 12 Months

5mo's saying Mama with meaning? Reeeaaally?

Sooo on Facebook the "Circle of moms" page always post random questions to all the moms and moms from all over FB answer. Todays Q? was what was your childs first word? I was reading the responses and quite a few people said thie 5mo could say Mama and really mean it.

Really? That seems soooo early. My ds cant talk yet, justs screams. Sometimes he says " Hey" really short and quick like hes really saying it but I dont believe it yet. He has said "Yeah" alot too but I dont think it counts.

Has your lo said thier first word yet?

  • I doubt a 5m-old can say "mama" intentionally. As much as her mama probably wants to believe it, it just seems really, really unlikely.

  • Whoa!

Same here! I try to get her to say Mama or Dada ALL the time! I point to me and say, "mama!" and then we point to my husband and say "dada!" and she just laughs at us!

She only says, "GA", "NA", "BA" and Sunday we THOUGHT we heard, "DA" but it's really short...no on and on sounds!

  • My parent's have "dada" in my baby book at 5 months, and we thought DS might have said "dada" around 5 months, but here we are at almost 9 months and nothing that we can say is actually a meaningful word. Maybe for some LO's, but not in our house.

  • DD said dada at about 6 months (I really need to get better about writing these things down), but it was more like dadadadada.

She says mamamamama now too, but she doesn't associate those words with DH or I.  When I get her up in the morning she does say mamamama, and I thought it was for me, but DH got her up yesterday and she said the same thing.

  • I doubt it. My DS has been saying "words" for a while now (mama, dada, baba, baby) but doesn't know what the heck he's saying! He started saying bye bye and waving a couple weeks ago, and he's almost 9 months. And I STILL don't think he even knows what bye bye means because he does it all the time!

Wishful thinking on that mom's part!

  • My LO has said Ma, Da, Ba, Buh, Nom but has no idea what they mean. I think this person is realllly pushing it. She probably wants to believe it sooo bad that she's convinced.

other than the random happy ramblings of dadada... and 'oh' or when he's mad or wants something it's mamamama... and he tries to make barking noises at the dog but I can't really see a 5month old saying mama with meaning....but I don't know... it could happen I guess..

Agreed. Sure my son can sound like he says Mama and Hi if I really listen but it's really just babbling.

  • My child reads out loud...what your kids can't read yet?   Stick out tongue   jk
  • Um, no.  DS has been saying "dadadada" for several months, but it's not directed at DH.  He also says "mamamama" but it's not directed at me, as much as I would like to think it is!

  • In the past two weeks my dd has started with the mama and dada.  It's pretty convincing at times, but I don't really think she knows it yet.

It's hard not to think it is on purpose sometimes when she's hysterical and a mama comes out though.  :)

  • DD said Mama at around 5 months, and she had absolutely no clue what she was talking about, she was just making sounds. now she says dadadada all day long, but she still doesn't associate dada w/ DH. she's just babbling. we all wish they knew what they were saying, but that's just not the case this early. everything is dada to DD right now.

LOL - Sadie calls everyone and everything "da da da da da da da da" and occassionally she'll say "haaaaa" (like "hi," but drawn out). None of it means anything. It is noise. She also makes a hissing sound like a cat and a whine like a puppy, but she's not trying to talk to the animals!

  • Not even close.  Jonathan sighs, squeals and sort of grunts but nothing even resembling a word.  That mom is thinking wishfully.
