Parenting after a Loss

How do you get around the burp?

I always making nursing the last thing we do before I put DD down for the night because it makes her really sleepy.  But after she's done eating, she needs to burp and a lot of times burping her wakes her up.  Sometimes she's totally asleep and it doesn't bother her, but other times it jolts her awake again.  How do you get around this?

  • Have you tried laying down and resting her on your chest and patting her? The pressure from her tummy laying on yours should make her burp. Plus patting her should make her go back to sleep.

  • Hope for the best and remember that she'll outgrow this difficulty! When DD was about that age, we knew we would have problems down the line if we didn't get that burp, but sometimes she was just way too sleepy. After a certain amount of time (10 minutes?), I'd just give up and lay her down. If she woke up, she wasn't quite ready to sleep anyway.

If you nurse a very sleepy baby, especially if you nurse lying down, they usually don't have to burp because they won't swallow much air when they're half asleep. Or so I have read. I've been doing that for a while and it seems to work just fine.
  • About 2 minutes before K will be totally out, I stop feeding and burp her. Then let her eat herself to sleep. It's usually only a few more minutes and she doesn't ever seem to get enough air in those few minutes to need to burp!
