DR suggests fattier foods for DS

When we took DS in for his 12 month check up she had said that when we give him table foods that we need to try and give him fattier foods. (he's on the small side) And she even suggested giving deep fat fried food or giving him ranch dressing with his veggies and things like that.

I dont mind giving him same ranch with his veggies or even some extra cheese....but deep fat fried food? Yes, please let me give my child more fried foods so he will have a heart attack by the time he's 5. lol I dont know, that just bothered me. I think I'll continue with my healthy meals that I give him.

  • you can give crackers that are higher in fat. I would skip the fried also.

  • I'd skip the fried crap, too. Avocado, whole-milk yogurt and other dairy products, olive oil are all good sources of fat for little folks.

  • Good grief! That is even worse advice than when my pedi told me to just keeping adding a bunch of salt to her food b/c I was concerned that she wasn't drinking enough.
  • How weird!  I understand about adding fats to his diet, but there are lots of "good" fats to choose from.

  • That's crazy! DS has always been on the thinner side and we were told to fatten him up as well at his 12 and 15 month appts. Try adding things like cheese, avocado, olive oil on veggies, even cooking things like eggs using butter, carnation instant breakfast, yogurt...the list really goes on and on and on. I just kept cooking healthy meals for DS but added healthier fats. He went from the 3rd % to 40th by his 18 month appt, he's still and skinny minnie though Smile

ETA: I know everyone is different but we started peanut butter at a year and he loves it and it's full of healthy fats

  • avocado, full fat yogurt/cheese/milk, and coconut milk smoothies! My DD loves smoothies and you can sneak a lot of extra calories/fat in with the coconut milk. Our pedi definitely believes you don't have to add unhealthy foods to help your LO gain weight, there are plenty of healthy fats and calories out there.
  • Fried food? Sick. I wouldn't give that either. I don't understand that line of thinking unless the child absolutely needs fat right away and refuses anything else.

Some kids are just smaller. My DD is 24 pounds at almost 22 months. She is healthy and happy but is a knock back of a generation, I guess. My mother and my grandmother are both petite women, so I am thinking that she got it from them.

You can try things like avocado, full fat yogurt (my DD loves Greek yogurt and the kind with cream on the top), different cheeses, different nut butters, egg dishes, olives (sounds weird, but my DD LOVES all kinds of olives), etc.

  • OMG, I think we had the same doctor. Well, mine was a temp thing while my son's doctor was on maternity leave. Anyways, she said the same thing, and it really bothered me. My son is on the small side but hitting milestones just fine and is alert and happy, but this doctor wanted me to feed him french fries and other fried foods. I'll admit that he gets a couple fries off our plates in the rare occasion we have them, but I really want to keep him on healthy foods as much as possible. Olive oil added to things, high fat dairy, etc just like others have said, are what we are relying on. He is still small, but progressing well enough, it seems...
  • wow. that is probably one of the weirder things I have heard a pedi say. fat is fine but like all the PP, tons of things have fat in them that are not deep fried. Other than french fries, I have never given DD anything deep-fried since I don't eat it myself.

IMO, it doesn't always need to be a "healthy" fat like we would eat i.e olive oil, etc. DD doesn't need to gain weight but she eats "bad" fat i.e. sausage, etc on occasion.

  • I'd ignore the suggestions altogther.  Even the ranch dressing.  Nothing more annoying then older children who refuse to eat things without a fatty/unhealthy dip.  Why start that now?

There are plenty of healthy ways to get good fats into his diet.  Kefir smoothies with fresh fruit.  Avocado has tons of good fats in it.  Things like that.

  • fat or no fat the carcinogens in fried food are a no-brainer reason to avoid it for DD.  I vote for full fat dairy products, avocado, and such.  Fried food?  Weird recommendation for a baby, IMO - but I am no doctor ;)
