Popularity and Nicknames for...

Sebastian

I don't know any and it's our top runner for a name right now. It isn't too high on the Social Security list but higher than I'd expected. I'm less worried about popularity (yet to see it on The Bump, which seems like a good sign) and more curious what nicknames would be. My mom and I were talking and agreed people calling him "Sebby" would be no good.

How many Sebastians do you know and what are nicknames for Sebastian?

(People seem to relate the name to Sebastian from The Little Mermaid but I'm OK with that.)

Re: Popularity and Nicknames for...

  • I knew a guy from Canada named Sebastian. He went by Seb, and it really worked for him!

  • I would think 'Bastian .... it's still 2 syllables, but it seems sort of like a comforting nickname :)

And Seb really isn't that bad...

  • my five year old nephew is Sebastian.  He's the only one i've ever come across.

He really doesn't have good nicknames. My dad started calling him Seabass so occasionally they (they being my dad and siblings) call him that, but other then that, he really just get scalled by the whole name.

I doubt that people will call him Sebby - its just not a NN that is appealing.

And the thing is YOU control his name.  All it takes is one or two corrections and people will get it.

My SIL's Sis' son is Andrew the 4th.  His dad is Andy.  He is called Drew.  She has never run into anyone who ignored her requests.

I agree. Most people will call him what you call him until he is old enough to make his own decision about what to be called.

As far as popularity, I'd take into account local numbers, rather than how often it's mentioned on here. Sometimes a name is really popular for a region, and gets mentioned a lot, but it's not on your local radar. According to the SS site, Sebastian was not in the top 100 in Oregon in 2008 (the latest year to search).

  • I actually think of Sebastian from  The Never Ending Story. He had the nickname of Bastian - which is what I think of too.
  • Someone on here one time had "Sebastian(nn Ash)" on one of their clicky polls.  That's not too bad.

  • I know two little Sebastian IRL (but I know alot of young kids through my son).  I don't get the sense it is too popular but I've heard it and love it.  It was on our short list for DS #2- we would have called him Bas.
  • I LOVE the name Sebastian.  That is my nephews name.  His nickname is Zeb.  My SIL and her husband had a good friend that they named him after, everyone called him Zeb as well.  I think it stems from Sebastian = Seb = Zeb.  i love it

    I like Ash

  • I know a 2.5 year old named Sebastian, and I think they call him Sebo for short. At first I thought it was terrible, now I think it's cute and it suits him.  They just had another DS and named him Johan (yo-hahn) - they like German names.

    Thanks for running that search!

I like Ash and Zeb. Zeb is actually a name DH had on his list on its own so that could be perfect. I'm actually getting a bit nervous knowing this might really be the name. DH is pretty much SET on Sebastian but there's a lot of time still so I didn't want to completely latch onto something yet.

    Thank you guys!

I knew a baby Sebastian IRL. We called him Saby (Say-bee) or Saba. They don't sound great, but he was such a Saby. GL!
  • Reminds me of Ryan Phillipe's character from Cruel Intentions... I don't hate the name overall though.
  • I've taught 4 Sebastions. 2 went by their full name, 1 went by Sebas said like See-bus and the other went by Astion said Ashton

This is where my favorite name came from. Sadly, it's already been used in our house- I didn't think forward to if I'd want to name my kids the same thing as my cat (Sebastian is the redhead in my sig) and reserve the best names for people. My Sebastian is shortened to Bastian most of the time. It's a very comfortable name after 10 years of calling it out- if it weren't for the cat- it would be my top name hands down.

Love love love it- and I only love it more after a decade of using it.
