2nd Trimester

Feel super guilty - had Coke (yikes! the caffeine!)

I've been trying to be really really good this pregnancy and rarely have ice cream/sweets, fast food, zero coffee and no sodas.  But we just had pizza (veggie!) and I just NEEDED a Coke with it.  (Some things you can't separate!)  I only had a glass - probably 9 ounces.  But, now I feel REALLY guilty because I know the effect of caffeine on the babies is bad.

I'm trying to be super good for this pregnancy: got IVF twins and been on bedrest for 7 weeks (started off because of bleeding and now because of short cervix).

I know this maybe sounds petty or like I'm overreacting, but I just feel bad now that the babies are hepped up on caffeine.  :(

  • Dude you are going to guilt yourself to death. You are fine and your babies are fine.

P.S. no one likes a martyr.

  • Yeah I think I had like 4 diet cokes last week.  They were freaking fantastic!!!!!
  • You didn't inject crack, it's caffeine. as long as you don't drink 12 cokes a day, you're fine.

  • You should be fine, I had a coke today to along with some heavy Thai food!

My doctor said if I needed it have it, but a constant diet of it is a big no no.

I get really bad migraines and the only thing that keeps me from wanting to ripe the lights out of the ceiling is a small coke every other day or two!

    Enjoy your pizza and coke!

  • I'm pretty sure if I gave up all caffeine, ice cream, sweets, and fast food, I would be dead.

You're allowed to have 200 mg of caffeine a day.  I have a coke at lunch every day and don't feel one bit bad about it.

I did IUI w/ injects and am expecting twins as well.  You'll be okay.

  • One coke is not going to matter AT ALL. I've probably had about 10 diet cokes this week and my dr. says it is absolutely fine.

Your not the only one! :)

  • You're right - I'm definately overreacting...but I really do feel guilty.  I think I am going stir crazy being so cutoff from everyone/everything for the last 7 weeks on bedrest.  Make me feel like I have to be SUPER careful...
  • I'm on bedrest too and for the same reason as you. A coke is not going to affect the length of your cervix.

You need to relax! Stress is worse for you than a coke.

  • You need to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. People eat sweets and ice cream and have an occasional Coke when Pregnant- it won't effect the babies.

    Yes

  • I've had a few cans of mountain dew over the past couple weeks. . I drink iced tea on a daily basis. and have had coffee. . and my LO's just fine.  I understand the whole "tryin to be careful with everything" mode, but seriously, stress is going to freak the baby out more than that coke did..

i dare you to have another! Indifferent

Should I feel guilty that I have had a coke probably every single day since I conceived?? Hmm

Don't worry about it! The daily ammount that's safe is way more than you had. I do understand where you're coming from though.. I was never much of a soda drinker, but I still go for it every couple weeks.

I definitely eat what I want too... chips, corn dogs, ice cream... YUM!

I have a 12 oz. coke every day (since the start of my second trimester, at which point the annoyance of obstaining from it seemed like overkill/silly). It is the one caffeine treat I allow myself - and it has WAY less than what they suggest as a limit. You're fine.

    This.

The only way I made it through the morning sickness of the first 24 weeks was a coke or three a day. Kiddo is more than fine.

  • I understand where you're coming from. I was told by my RE and OB to avoid caffeine during our IVF cycles and also during first trimester. It can be hard to get out of that mind-set of "caffeine is bad". You will be fine and so will your babies, please don't worry.

  • I had a 6oz serving of sashimi yesterday and it was DELICIOUS.

    Feel better?

I haven't had fertility struggles, so I know my view on dietary slip-ups probably differs greatly from those who have...but I grew up in a medical household (Dad is a cardiologist and Mom is a Neonatal ICU nurse and sister-like cousin is a high-risk OB-GYN) and realize that MANY of those "don't eat/drink that!" rules are about moderation. And Medical CYA (Cover Your A$$) bc of the litigious nature of today's society.

So relax! And enjoy your (occasional) Coke.

  • The stress you are giving your body over one coke, is worse than the coke.
  • Chill Out!  You can have 220 mg of caffeine per day before it affects the babies, that is almost 4 cans of Coke.  Each has 60 mg.

you can indulge yourself from time to time, just don't over do it.  The key is moderation!

yup that would be me lol

  • Wow..I drink at least one coke/sweet tea a day. LO's perfectly healthy. I do love the look on people's faces in restaurants when I order sweet tea though. The other day I was at Chik-Fil-A and ordered a sweet tea. The caashier said "are you sure". I said "yes, I want a sweet tea".

Hello-just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you need to live under a rock.

  • I have moderate amounts of caffeine pretty regularly. It's not a big deal as long as you stay under 220mg.

You could probably drink two more and still be under the daily amount.

  • I have a diet coke every morning. Dr said it was fine, well below the 200 mg limit. :) (and the 'diet' was fine too, was actually a little worried about that). Embarrassed

  • I've got a 16 mo old and have at least 1 soda a day.  I also had a soda a day with DD#1 and she is fine.  The only person you're hurting is yourself (they love to kick you to death on caffiene).  You are way under your daily caffiene limit so cut yourself some slack.  Babies aren't as fragile as we think they are (only realized that this time around) and you're a good mama.

I just had a cup of coffee.  I aim to keep the caffeine under 200mg/day and feel zero guilt!

  • I was totally avoiding caffeine until a couple of weeks ago, when I was mistakenly served a caffeinated latte instead of decaf. I didn't realize it until a while later. The worst that happened was that I was still wide-awake at midnight that night. You can't un-drink the Coke, and guilt is not going to help anything. If it is really bothering you that much, maybe have some caffeine-free Coke on hand in the event that you get another craving!

  • I have 3/4 diet cokes a week. and live on pizza.  Had grilled cheese and fries for dinner followed by ice cream.

you are WAY taking this moderation over the top.  Almost everything in moderation is OK.  take it easy on your self or you will drive yourself nuts, even after you have the babies!!

  • I have Dr. Pepper every morning. I work long hours at work and I'm no fun to deal with unless I've had a little bit of something to wake me up. I follow that up with at least four HUGE glasses of water throughout the day, and a Powerade if I just can't stomach water anymore. I feel that since I've given up a few things that I didn't want to, a little soda every day won't hurt - before I was pregnant, I was drinking at least 2-3 cans of Red Bull each day on top of a few Dr. Peppers. I'm happy I cut it down to just one DP!
  • If you feel too bad about it buy caffeine free coke. I allow myself one caffeine free Pepsi or a glass of sweet tea a day. I couldnt go without!
  • Get over yourself.  It is not that easy to harm the baby or else the human race would never have survived.
  • Yeah- I have had a few ice cream cones and I have either iced tea or coke every other week. You'll be fine.

    Word.
  • As the PPs said, I would TRY not to feel guilty... although IMO, guilt is a normal part of motherhood.  Sounds like you are really trying to do whats best for your children, and doing things for yourself (like enjoying that coke) from time to time are MORE than deserved.  Don't beat yourself up!
