45 minutes???? I've never let DD cry for more than 5 minutes. I honestly cannot imagine listening to a 3 DAY OLD cry, helplessly for 45 minutes. That's disgusting.

This. We let DS cry for 12 minutes before he fell asleep the other night....but he's 10 months old.
But she came back and said she realized it was wrong.
Honestly, to read that a 3 day old baby was CIO for 45 minutes made me sick to my stomach. Can you imagine being cradled in the womb for 9 months and on your 3rd day of life in a new, cold, and different world you're just left there to cry.
Yeah, letting a 3-day-old CIO is horrible, but I think that CPS would probably not be too interested. I mean, you have people beating their kids and burning them with cigarettes, CIO is probably pretty low on the priority list.

I am proud of her for admitting she was wrong, but it does make me ill. I was looking at newborn pics of Sadie this week and I can't get over how teeny tiny and helpless she was. It makes me feel all Mama Bear thinking about such a wee one crying for so long.
I will confess that when I was exhausted and not thinking straight when DD was about 2 weeks old I thought I was supposed to let her CIO. It lasted about 3 minutes, if that. It felt like hours. Then I just cuddled, snuggled etc., spoke with my mom the next morning who laughed & said no, not yet, wait a few more months, when she will figure it out. That made me feel foolish, but not horrible.
Sometimes it's exhaustion & unclear thinking that can lead to the CIO too young situation. Now - DD is 7 months and some nights when she goes down she fusses & musses a little and goes off to sleep. I don't like it to escalate, but I also don't run in at the first cry. IMO neither of those options are too healthy.
I think she explained herself wrong. I think the baby was crying for 45 mins while they were doing things to soothe her, but nothing was working.
I really hope that you are right. That whole thread is making me so sad I can't even finish it.
We have friends with a DD 4 weeks younger than DS, they let her CIO at 6 weeks. I started crying when I read her fb status about it.

Re: Good grief. I always pick the best days to come play.
I love the post about CIO being child abuse and grounds for calling child services. Just wait a few months....
Just for clarification (so I don't get flamed), CIO is NOT appropriate for 0-3. 6-12 mamas, have at it if it's what you want to do.
I love the word dingbat.
I have nothing further to contribute to this discussion.

Ugh makes me ill.
Amen, Mav.
