GRACO CRIB RECALL (and vent)

Hello- I am reposting this from the Pregnant over 35 board.

Hello,

Most of the Graco dropside cribs have been recalled.  I just found out today.  Please click on the link below to see if yours is too.

https://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10212.html

They will send a hardware kit, BUT it will PERMANENTLY disable the dropside.  To me, that renders the crib useless, since I am 5 feet tall and would not be able to get my baby in or out.  We have decided to return the crib.

I am just super stressed out.  Everything that can go wrong HAS gone wrong this week.  My husband literally put the crib together last night and I got it all ready with the bedding etc. We will get out money back, but we got it at a super LOW price because the color was discontinued.  We do not have the money to buy another more expensive crib.

I also found out that we will need become a 1 car household, so basically I will be trapped at home all the time now.  We are not in the position to buy another car now that one is no longer drivable. Crying

Sorry about the long vent.  I really just wanted to pass a long the info.  Thanks for listening.

  • I am sorry you are having such a crummy week. Hang in there, it's almost Friday.

And, FWIW, you are too adorable for words! Super cute bump!!!

  • I'm sorry--that sucks about the recall.

We got our crib from Walmart.  It wasn't expensive, and I really like it.  It sits much lower than the drop-side cribs that I've seen.  Also, Ikea has great cribs at very reasonable prices.  And FWIW, we didn't even get our crib until after DD was born--it all worked out.

We're a one car household as well.  It wasn't a problem when we were in Boston, but we moved to VA a few weeks ago, and it's definitely a challenge.  DH and I worked it out so we drop him off and pick him up 3 days/week, and he takes the car the other two days.  We're also thinking about working out a flex-time schedule for him where he'd have Fridays off--don't know if something like that is an option for you.

I love all of your bump pics!

  • I guess I'm kind of surprised you can even still buy a drop side crib.  I thought they were so often recalled that no one was even selling them anymore.. let alone buying them.

And being the giagantor that I am, I've never had a problem with being short.  But would getting yourself a stepstool help at all with getting the baby in and out?

As for a 1 car family, it's amazing what you learn to do when you suddenly have limited mobility.  Most everyone I know who is in that situation learns to adapt pretty well.  I think Americans are probably too darn dependent on their cars, anyway!  HA!

  • Oh, about being too short for the crib. I know the Gulliver from Ikea sits really low and is only $100. I know it's $100's more that you shouldn't have to spend if your crib wasn't recalled, but maybe you can take it back and get your money  back instead of completing the recall. I know every review of the Gulliver crib says they look flimsy in the showroom because they just slap them together, but that when they put it together at home it is really stable. One mom to be posted a pic of hers painted hers a really pretty aqua/turqoise and it I love it.

  • Well that just sucks this close to delivery.  But honestly, our LO didn't start sleeping in her crib until 2 months.  We have an IKEA crib - I forget which one, but it was rated by Consumer Reports as a best buy and we love it.  It was a pain to put together - I won't lie.  But it was very affordable.  I'm sure you'll find something reasonable that you're happy with.  Good luck!
