When to tell work

So, I am trying to get a feel for when others are telling work about the big news.  Also, maybe what type of environment you work in.  Thanks!

Re: When to tell work

  • I've already let work know.  I teach high school English, and with the school year ending in a month, I thought it only right to let them know, pending any serious misfortunes, that I wouldn't be coming back in the fall.  DH and I had already decided that once we had kids I would be a stay at home mom, at least until they started school (since my schedule would then be the same as theirs).

  • My plan wasn't to tell them for another 6 weeks, but I've already gotten several comments.

  • I plan on telling my boss after our first u/s so is a few weeks. I am a salon manger(the only one) since I am due durning our busy time,I want to give him enough time to figure out his plan. He takes over while I am gone, if he can. Or he replaces me and I come back just as a stylist( which I think I am ok with)

  • So did you go ahead and let them know once you started getting comments, or are you covering up?
  • I work in research and I am the only employee in my new start up lab that just began in february)  (we didnt plan this so well... it was sort of an OMG your Kidding...)

I am telling my boss the week before our appointment.  I do not see him except for 1/week and figured it would be safer to tell him before our appointment vs after since my mom is just dying to let the cat out of the bag... I know family will post etc on FB and one of the other folks who is on my advisory committee for the lab will see stuff.  So I figure to tell the boss and the two on my committee just before...

I can't say I am looking forward to it... but figure the timing might work out well as we are due 2 weeks before christmas and most folks wont want to be doing stuff over christmas... and if I can get a student worker to do some stuff the two weeks after we should be ready to start up when I come back in 6 weeks. Just 2 more weeks... (freaking out)

  • My annual review and goal-setting for the year is coming up in June. I think I will meet privately with my boss after my review is finalized but before we set my new year's goals. The other position in our two-person department is vacant right now and we're on hiring freeze so I want to give my boss a good bit of notice.

I may wait a little later to tell the rest of my CWs...maybe till July or August, depending on how much I'm showing. I'd like to hold off the annoying comments as long as possible, plus I'd like my boss and I to figure out how we'll handle my leave before people start grilling us about it.

  • I work in a small office (about 20 people max, all of them men too!).  I have a great relationship with my local manager so I ended up telling him right away.  He was really good about letting me work from home when I was tired, etc.

I told other people in my office around 7w b/c I couldn't keep it in anymore and we're like family.  And now that the u/s is done and everything looks good, I don't care who knows here.

My technical boss is in another state and I won't tell her until after my 1st Trimester.

No, I'm totally lying!  well, not entirely lying.  I'm saying things like, "no, we're trying to sell the house first (which was technically the plan, this just happened faster than we thought!)" and "this (pointing to belly) is from eating too much."  I've also said that I'm not wearing my spanx today!

It pisses me off--if they were calling me out on m/s or something it would be one thing, but since I"ve only gained 1-3 pounds (depending on the day), they're basically calling me fat!

  • I manage a very busy medical office so I told my boss right away. But I am waiting to tell our medical director until after our first U/S on Monday. Then I will let the cat out of the bag to everyone. I am busitng at the seams to tell people. I think that people supsect becuase I was a die hard diet coke addict and now I have cut down to just one in the morning on my drive to work. I will be so happy to no longer have this secret!
  • I told my boss a few weeks ago.  I hadn't planned on it, but I was very sick and needed time off and a little flexibility with my schedule.  He's been totally cool with it.

I would do this, but my boss can't keep her mouth shut.

  • I work at a very small non-profit. (4 people on the payroll, only 2 of us are in the office, other two work on grant projects elsewhere in the state)

My boss (only other person in the office) is pregnant and due on May 15th. I think he last day is going to be May 7th. And she's only going to take like a month off. And then she's going to be slowly easing back into work (only like 10-20 hours a week, down from her normal 60) and mainly working from home. Her husband is a teacher and has the summer off, so that helps them a lot.

I'm not going to tell her until she gets back into the office (probably end of June?). I'm going to miss our big annual conference that we put on every year. I do a lot of the planning and the week of the conference involves working 14 hour days and this year it's 400 miles away. Not going to happen when I'm 37 weeks along!

I have some suggestions on how to cover my work while I"m gone. But I want to take time to come up with a more concrete plan so I can present it to her when she gets back. I don't want her to worry about anything while she's gone since she isn't taking that much time off to begin with.

It's going to be interesting to say the least!

  • I plan on telling my boss and coworkers around week 12, when I tell everyone else.

  • I'm thinking of telling everyone else after our 8 week u/s (my boss and a select few people already know.)  I think many people have already guessed and I'm tired of lying about it, plus I want to feel comfortable eating throughout the day without people looking at me like I'm gross. Wink
  • I told my boss at week 5 when she heard me registering for my hospitals parenting program (its an insurance thing, so I wanted to know what I had to do right away).  She thought I was going back to school and started to panic that I'd leave.

I told my nearly full term co-worker about a week later, because I was fishing for info on her prenatal yoga class and how the company is handling her maternity leave.  If I hadn't spilled the beans I'd have looked like a crazy pg-lady stalker.

I told the other 3 people I work with last week at my Admin proffessionals lunch.  It seemed like a good time, plus, with such a small office, it could have caused some hard feelings for some to know and others not.

As for the rest of the company, I don't plan on telling them until after my 1st real OB appt. (not the nurse interview) which is in 2 weeks.

  • I work retail, and Bosslady usually has me closing most nights. I told her at 7 weeks because I'm so wiped out by the end of the night that I can barely keep my eyes open while we close. I was hoping for a little sympathy and some non-closing shifts, but if you saw my post on the 1st tri board... Let's just say it didn't go quite like I had hoped.

  • I work from home for my BFF, soooo... when I got my BFP I sent her a pic of it (she is pg too, 5 weeks further than I). She knew when DH knew, lol.

  • I manage a legal program within HR for a global biotech. I am 9w and just told my boss because I need to figure out my maternity leave coverage, train someone, and I also asked for extended leave. I wanted to give her time to think about it and come up with a decision.

The other VPs will be told (by her) after I hit 13 weeks (the week I fly back up for an on site visit). Everyone else in the dept will just figure it out.

  • June 4th is the big day for me.  It's when I start my 2nd trimester and it's also a Friday.  I'm keeping it pretty quiet till then, we're just telling our close friends and family at this point.

  • I won't tell until I start to show. Maybe July sometime. I work alone in a private office for a huge hospital, I don't really have coworkers since I'm the only person who performs my job function for my dept, and I don't give a flying fvck what they do to cover me on my leave. I probably won't be coming back, either, unless they can meet my 99% work remote on a PT schedule wish list. If they're not keen on that, I'll SAH and do contract work, which I already get a ton of on the side.

Can you tell I love my job? lol

  • I was planning on waiting until after my first actual OB appt (have my nurse appt next week).  However the m/s has really started to kick in this week and since I was already yawning like crazy all the time, I figured I should tell my boss what's up so he doesn't think I'm coming in hungover all the time.  I told him this morning and he was totally cool about it.  Of course, he has 8 kids, and I work at a really family friendly company.  He actually told me that if I decided I didn't want to come back because I wanted to stay home with the baby he completely understands (his wife stays at home), just to keep him updated.  Can't wait to tell the rest of my coworkers.  I want to wait until after the appt, but if I continue to feel this crappy it's going to be a little obvious.
  • I work in IT for a University.

I haven't told anyone yet.  I'm not planning on doing so until I can't hide it anymore.  They're going to freak cause we're short-staffed, overworked, and one person will be out in August and two people out in October. Every weekly meeting is filled with panic about what we're going to do for those two months and ZOMG the place is going to fall apart.

And there I sit knowing I'm going to be out from December thru February.  It's a little uncomfortable, since I do like my co-workers and don't want to make this worse for them than it'll be, but I'm sticking to my guns.

  • I have to tell my boss now and I'm not looking forward to it. I work in agricultural research with a lot of manual labor and pesticide exposure.

I had my U/S bumped up to confirm because I just found out this week that my boss wants me to spray herbicide next week. I wanted to be sure when I tell him because I'm pretty sure that he's going to be ticked :(

  • We aren't saying anything to anyone until we reach the second tri. Basically because we have reason to make sure that we are in for the long haul. Smile

We were both entirely surprised by getting pregnant, especially after having been told it might not be possible for both of us individually and especially together. I was actually being examined for a viral or bacterial infection before I thought - whoa, could I be pregnant?

    And what do ya know.....
