3rd Trimester

Birth Plan ... critiques welcomed

I am seeing my OB today and am bringing him my birth preferences.

Did I forget anything?  We were told it is a good idea to keep it down to 1 page.

Birth Preferences

Mother?s name: Christine

Father?s name (support provider): Steve

Mother?s OB/GYN: Dr.

Baby?s Pediatrician: Dr.

  • Mother is _______ B Strep
  • If IV is needed, I prefer a Hep-Lock
  • Would like to move around during labor
  • Husband to be present entire time
  • To stay hydrated with clear liquids and ice chips
  • Eat/Drink as approved by doctor
  • Request a private room
  • Request a squatting bar

Labor Augmentation

  • I would like to discuss any type of labor augmentation

 Pain Relief

  • On request by mother. I know what is available.

Delivery

  • Might want to squat or use gravity friendly positions

After Delivery

  • Hold baby skin-to-skin immediately after delivery
  • My husband Steve to cut the umbilical cord.
  • Donate cord blood, if available
  • To see the placenta before it?s discarded

C-Section

  • Make sure all other options are exhausted
  • Stay conscious.
  • Husband to stay with me the entire time
  • Breastfeed in recovery room

Baby Exams & Care

  • Prefer APGAR tests be performed on mother?s chest
  • I would like to breastfeed at least once before eye drops/ointment are given
  • All procedures to be done in father?s presence
  • Please do not give baby: sugar water, formula or a pacifier

In case baby is a boy, we would like a circumcision performed.

In case baby is in NICU, I would still like to breastfeed or provide pumped breastmilk.

  • One last thing... fetal monitoring... do you want it consistent or intermittent?  Meaning... do you want to be hooked up the whole time or do you just want periodic checking?

  • Brilliant :-) I might have to steal your layout and modify it.. I had NO idea how to organize mine.
  • I so wish I had done this with DS.  I didn't and I regret it...everything I didn't want to have happen, happened.  This looks really good.  Good luck!
  • three additional things that i have in mine...

    preference for intermittent monitoring
preference for spontaneous pushing rather than directed pushing
preference for natural tearing over episiotomy

other than that, looks good to me!

  • It's good that it is short and to the point.  Nurses and doctors don't want to read novels or explanations.  The only thing I'd add is something quick about fetal monitoring.
  • I think it's short, sweet and to the point.

To my knowledge, they won't routinely put you under for a c/s unless it's an emergency. So that may or may not be necessary to include.

Maybe have your doctor sign off on it so that the nurses know that you already discussed it with him/her.

Otherwise, looks good. Good for you to plan. It definitely helps (especially when going med free) to think about your options leading up to the birth.

Thanks! I knew I was forgetting something!

  • Mine is similar. A few things I added to mine:

    • would like to be warned before it is too late for an epidural
    • would like to meet with a lactation consultant
    • would like for nurses to remind me when it is time to breastfeed and do not want visitors during feeding times (a friend told me the nurses will kick your visitors out for you so you don't have to feel awkward asking them to leave)
I also don't see anything in yours about fetal monitoring.  MW suggested I put my preferences so I put regular monitoring but only constant monitoring if the baby needs it.  I also added how I'd like induction, if necessary -- first by breaking amniotic sack and only using pitoctin or other meds if that doesn't work.
