Almost done shopping for gear...couple of things left:
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay?
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser)
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???)
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right?
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay?
Re: Gear Yay or Nay...2nd timers come in please!
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? No
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) Yes
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) Yes, but not the actual burp cloths, we use the cloth diapers & they work GREAT
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? No....we had a ton with DD & still have those, probably more than we need, but I would guess around 10-12 8oz and 6 4oz
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? Yes
1. Diaper Genie - Yes or something like it...we have the Diaper Dekor..you can use regular trash bags in it if you don't want to buy the more expensive refills...it is so nice to have something to contain the stink...at 2am you don't want to walk outside to throw out a diaper
2. Changing table pad- yes, especially if you are using a dresser...you need the safety buckle
3. Burp cloths - towel would be fine, burp clothes are a nice size...cloth diapers work too
4. Bottle warmer - no if you're breastfeeding..you won't use it enough. i only had 2 bottles (playtex drop-ins) in each size...we didn't bottle feed much and with the drop-ins you don't have to wash out the inside, just the nipples so we had more of those.
5. Bottle drying rack - no again
1. diaper genie... No 2. changing table pad.. do you mean mattress? yes 3. burp cloths.. definitely YES towels/ recieving blankets just dont do the job, they leak through and burp cloths are nice n thick!! 4. bottle warmer.. no 5. bottle drying rack.. yes! Hope that helps! good luck
I'm a first timer, but I'll share my thoughts. I'll be interested to read other replies!
1. I'm opting out of the diaper genie. I don't want another thing I don't absolutely need in my small living space. I found earth friendly baggies (kind of like dog poop bags) at buy buy baby, though they're probably available elsewhere too, that I plan to use, at least at first. I read of someone doing this and then said they did not smell (esp for breast fed baby) when put in regular trash. I figure I can always add the diaper genie later if this does not wokr out.
2. I have an antique desk which is the right hight. I keep going back and forth about the pad myself, so it'll be neat to read what advice you get.
3. I've heard that cloth diaper "prefolds" (think gerber type) are the best bet here. It's what we're planning to use.
No advice for no. 4 or 5 - good luck. : )
1. optional but nice to have
2. yes, I think it's a must-have
3. nah, inexpensive cloth diapers (like a pack of the Gerber ones) work better
4. optional but nice to have (I'd say start with 9 bottles in the 4 or 5 oz size; the Gerber and Evenflo BPA-free worked fine for us with DD - I EBF'ed but when they were worried about DD's weight gain in the early days, I pumped some and we gave her that milk too. BTW I don't know if you got a Boppy, but I found the My Breast Friend pillow to be so much better for BF early on.)
5. optional, but nice to have
1. Diaper Genie - IDK if you want one i would ge the diaper champ that only needs regular trash bags.
2. Changing table pad - yeap!
3. Burp cloths - yes, specially those cheap cloth diapers they have at walmart, those are great!
4. Bottle warmer - no, i see no use for this
5. bottle drying rack- i didnt have one with my first, all i did was wash the bottles and put them upside down in a big plastic bowl
1. Diaper Genie - Total Yay for us, but we JUST put the poopy ones in it as the refills can get spendy and the pee pee ones are not nearly as stinky as poo!! For the pee we just kept a small trash can that got emptied into the larger main trash every other day or so.
2. Changing table pad - If you mean the cushion, the urine pad liner or the cover I say yes to ALL THREE!
3. Burp cloths - We used cloth diapers instead, way more durable!!
4. Bottle warmer - We had one but my lil one liked room temp so never used,..the bottles I would have a few to see how you do and buy more as you need and go see about how much and how often the lil one eats depending on how BFing goes etc.
5. Bottle drying rack - Total yes esp if you will not use the dishwasher,..I hated the munchin one I had last time and just found a 1st years one that is a circular spin rack that I already love to pieces!
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? - Nay, they always end up stinking in a few months no matter what you do, just wrap your dirties up in a plastic bag (you get a million for free when you buy your groceries, right?) and take them right outside.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) - Nay, you are going to end up changing the bulk of the diapers on the run, on the floor, on the bed, everywhere BUT the "changing table" save the bucks for something you might actually need regularly.
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) - Nay, I had a fountain spitter, the standard 30x30 receiving blankets were WAY too small to swaddle him in so they became the "burp cloths" (we called the spit up blankets) and I had to buy swaddlers for swaddling (the little burp cloths we got are still in a drawer unused, they were just too small to be useful).
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? - Nay. If you are going to BF I wouldn't plan on having more than a few bottles on hand. DS was EBF for seven months, I had three bottles, we never even used one of them. Breastmilk is easily thawed/reheated by just running it under warm water for a few minutes. Overheating breastmilk (as bottle warmers are known to do) can kill the good bacteria in the breastmilk and render it much less good for your child (although it still won't be BAD, just not as good).
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? - Nay. You probably won't need many bottles, and the ones you do need will dry just fine in the dishwasher, or if you are not a fan of bottles in the dishwasher, they can just be set upside down on a clean kitchen towel.
Hey, look at all the money I just saved you!1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? Yes- have the Diaper Genie II and loved it w/ DS.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) Yes
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) I just used some of the white Gerber "cloth diapers" that you can buy just about anywhere. They worked fine.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? No to the bottle warmer. DS drank his room temp, or the microwave worked fine. (cup of water heated, bottle heated in that if it was breastmilk). I just pulled out the bottles and sterilized them- I had 6 that were 4 oz size, and 14 that were 8 oz size. We didn't have a dishwasher with DS, so I would let them soak if I didn't get to them right away sometimes and not have them clean for the next day of daycare, so I needed extras. Probably won't need that many this time around, we have a dishwasher that we run almost daily as it is.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay?
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? NAY get a Diaper CHAMP no need for special bags that way
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) YAY get one with the wings
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) YAY but get pre fold cloth diapers. They hold WAY more
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? NAY I used playtex drop ins and I think have 6 bottles. You can get extra nipples
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? NAY don't need this with the drop ins BUT I did buy a little container for the dishwasher to put the nipples in.
1. Diaper genie- No. Go with a regular trash can and take the stinky ones straight outside. our LO poops a few times a week though so its pretty easy for me to take them out.
2. changing pad- yeah
3. Burp clothes- No, they are a sucky size and DS misses them every time because he bobs his little head around so much. We have gerber cloth diapers with are a bigger size and do the job nicely.
4. Bottle Warmer- No. Big waste of money IMO. Either try to see if he takes it chilly or run it under warm water. We planned to BF. I picked up a 99cent cheap gerber bottle from Target as a just in case item. Had to EP so it came in handy and we use that brand because they seem to work fine.
5. bottle drying rack-No at first, but if you end up needing to use bottles regularly buy a regular drying rack. I have a drying rack that holds them at a slight angle and they really don't dry fully like they do when I use my mom's regular drying rack
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? Nay. I only used mine once. Just take the stinky poo ones out as soon as you change them and you will be fine.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) If you are going to be doing all your changing there, then yes. We changed wherever the accident occured. There was no need to get up and take the baby to the nursery every time we changed a diaper. We had a diaper caddy that we took all around the house.
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) Yay, they are softer IMO.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? I guess it depends. I used the drop-in bottles, so a warmer would have just melt the plastic liner.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? Yay. We strictly FF, and I washed my bottles and nipples daily (even though I didn't have to). I used my drying rack faithfully EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Ditto this! I had the Munchkin one with DD#1 and switched to the 1st years spin rack too! Can't wait to use it!
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? Yay, but we have the other brand, the one that doesn't individually wrap diapers
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? Yay
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? Yay
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Nay. I actually never gave DD a bottle. DH just warmed them in hot water the occasional nights I was out.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? Nay. We washed bottles in the dishwasher.
We had 3 sets of bottles so we could try different brands. I think that was 11 total. I wanted that many just so I could throw bottles in the dishwasher and still have plenty for daycare the next day.

1. Diaper Genie - No. I preferred the diaper champ because you can use regular trash bags
2. Changing table pad - yes. definitely
3. Burp cloths - LOTS of them. Don't bother with the cute fancy ones. Just get the good ole Gerber white ones. LOTS of them.
4. Bottle warmer - No.
5. Bottle drying rack - No. We just used our regular dish rack.
1. Diaper Genie - Yay not a "must have" but I like ours.
2. Changing table pad - Yay
3. Burp cloths - Yay-ish, I used the cloth diaper pre folded things from Walmart, they worked GREAT. I did not like the thin burp clothes.
4. Bottle warmer - Nay? i never had one, nor do I think I needed one.
*Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? I had about 8 bottles, BFing only worked the first 7wks for me.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay, it was nice to have so one bottle didn't knock over all the other ones standing up. That was VERY frustrating to a frazzled 1st time mom.
I had some of those! They were GREAT!!
1. No, not with the required refills.
2. Yes, very helpful at first. Although we did start changing DD on the floor on a wateroroof mat when she started rolling.
3. We used burp cloths, cloth diapers, or wash cloths.
4. No, but DD only had ~8 bottles total.
5. No, see 4.
So glad you asked!
1. Diaper Genie - NAY - get the DIAPER CHAMP. You don't need special bags for this one, you can use plastic bags from the supermarket.2. Changing table pad - Yay. Perfect.3. Burp cloths - Nay. You can use whatever.4. Bottle warmer - Nay. COMPLETELY unnecessary.5. Bottle drying rack - Yay. You'll have a ton of use for it!
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? Yay for me definitely- I live in a condo where trash can only go out twice/week. It's crucial for me. But if you have a house where you can toss your trash daily, I guess don't bother.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) Definitely- I don't see how you would change DC without one (unless you did it on the bed or somewhere else).
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) My DS never spit up (ever), but if yours does, you'll want them for sure (not a towel). They're smaller and easier to wash. I would just get a small pack and if you need more (ie if your baby spits up a bunch), you can get more. I found them handy for BF'ing too- BM seems to go everywhere....
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? I BF'd- I got ONE pack of bottles just to have them in the house and got more as I needed them- but don't get too many. I preferred the drop-ins myself. As for a bottle-warmer, I'd say no. I got one and I did use it here and there, but for the most part I defrosted BM with a bowl of water.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? If you're BF'ing, than no for sure.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) Yay, we also use a dresser
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? Partial Yay, I used the thin cloth diapers and had about 3-4 laying around in various places throughout the house and car; towels are too thick.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Nay...I BF and had 6 4oz bottles and 4 8oz bottles
5. Bottle drying rack - Initially nay, but I gave in and got one, so I would have to say Yay...works well for sippy cups too
1. Nay. We just toss them in the regular garbage can with a lid. That gets taken out about every other day anyway.
2. Nay. I changed and still change G's diapers on a waterproof mat on the floor, and I'll do the same for baby girl.
3. YAY!! Get a designated cloth. Spit up can stain. Plus you don't want terry cloth, you want a basic cotton or something similar that is absorbent but not hard to get milk out of.
4. I BF'd so I had no need for this.
5. Yay. We had wash all dishes, including bottles/nipples/liners. If I didn't have a special rack, they'd get buried under other dishes and be hard to find when in a hurry. Plus, the nips, etc might get a bit more damaged if plates, pots, bowls are stacked on them every day.
Big brother and sister are excited to meet the new baby! It's a GIRL!

2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? Absolutely, and get several covers for it while you're at it!
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? Yup, but not the cutesey Carters, etc ones. Get the birdseye cloth diapers ones from BRU, they're fantastic for burp clothes, even if they're not adequate as CDs.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Nope, never had/used one. We just warmed the bottle in hot water or gave it to him chilled. How many bottles did you get...I think I had 4 9-oz and 6 6-oz bottles. We washed every other night (DS was only in daycare M-W-F)
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? Yup, we hand washed our bottles until DS started solid foods at 6 mo.
1. Diaper Genie - No. Recommend diaper champ so you can use your own trash bags. recommend the ones with odor block.
2. Changing table pad - Yay. Definitely. We still use ours on our almost 2yo, but we put it on the floor.
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? Didn't buy specific burp clothes just had a few nice ones as gifts that we used when out in public like church and stuff. Get a couple packs of the thick cloth diapers to use. They'll soften up after a few washes.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay. Depends on if you work and plan to pump. I had around 12 so I'd have some to take to pump/fill and some for daycare.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay. It's easier to keep all the parts and pieces together and it gets worse with sippy cups.
1. Diaper Genie - Yay or Nay? I like the Diaper Champ better - if you're going to get one. We have one but only upstairs - downstairs we just take it out.
2. Changing table pad - Yay or Nay? (we have an antique dresser, not an actual changing table, but the height is just right, so I planned on putting it on the dresser) Definitely - don't want to lay the baby on the wood...and for accidents and such - don't want pee/poop on your antique!
3. Burp cloths - Yay or Nay? (do you just use a towel instead???) I have them - but I use cloth diapers not actual burp clothes. I have a ton - my first son was a barfer.
4. Bottle warmer - Yay or Nay? Also - how many bottles did you get...I plan to BF but still want some on hand, right? I have one - but not really needed.
5. Bottle drying rack - Yay or Nay? I have one - but it's a hand-me-down. I wouldn't buy one if I didn't have someone give me one.
