I'll probably go ahead and do it, because I don't see how it can really hurt. But I thought BM was the "perfect" food for LO's. Why would I need to supplement something? He said he advises it for all EBF babies.

Re: Did pedi tell you to give vitamin d?
Practically the only thing bm is low on is Vitamin D. We give DS TriViSol everyday. It's a 'multivitamin' of A, C, and D; you just give 1mL from a dropper either directly into the mouth or add it to a bottle of bm if you're giving any bottles. DS likes the taste of it just fine. Just DON'T get any vitamins with Iron - all of them taste like a copper penny and most kids will gag or throw it up.
Yes. They mentioned it at the 2 week appointment. FYI for all of those who want to use the sun. Even in the south the sun does not allow for much production of vitamin D except in midday (11-3) and only in the late spring and summer on completely sunny days. Unlike UV light for sunburns which can happen on a cloudy day...little to no vitamin D is activated on an overcast day. A fair skinned child needs about 15 minutes but darker skinned children may need in excess of 30 minutes to an hour. Vitamin D is very important for healthy bone development. As an orthopedic surgeon I would recommend that everyone supplement their children with vitamin D always...on up through adulthood. We see a lot of vitamin D deficient children with multiple fractures even here in Georgia. As for BM being the "perfect food", I am afraid nothing in this world is "perfect".
Some pedis will also recommend a fluoride supplement starting at 6 months.
Our pedi mentioned it. We put one dropper of the Enfamil Poly Vi Sol into one bottle of BM a day.
