Do I have to dry clean a special-occasion outfit before use?

We have a silk dress for DD to wear for a special event (my mom bought it for her) - the washing instructions are dry clean only. I am usually extremely vigilant about washing all clothes before DD wears them, but don't really want to have to pay to dry clean this before the event. The dress is at my parents house, so my Mom will be in charge of whatever care we decide on before the event. She doesn't want to wash it at home because she is worried once it's washed, the colors will fade or the shape of the dress will change.

How critical is it that I wash/dry clean it before DD wears it?

ETA: If, in the end, we decide DD shouldn't wear it unless we can wash/clean it first,we'll probably take it back and get something we can wash/clean before use.

  • I would not dry clean anything your baby is going to wear.  The chemicals they use are terrible, especially for a lil one.    You could try this:

    It sounds involved, but harmless.

  • I would not dry clean it either. Just have her wear it as is.
  • I agree with PP, I'd just have her wear it as is--definitely don't dry clean it. Has she shown any kind of skin sensitivity? If not by this point you probably don't have anything to worry about.
  • I wouldn't dry clean anything a baby would wear, the chemicals are worse than anything that would be on the dress from the factory. Could she wear a onsie under it so it wouldn't be right against her skin?

  • I usually wash everything before DS wears it, but I wouldn't if it were a dry clean only item.  I think it is fine to put it on without cleaning, especially if it is just a one-time special occassion.
