Re: if you have been to an all inclusive hotel

  • oooo where ya going?

we tipped the housekeeper and at meals

  • we do.   Gratuity is supposed to be included in the all-inclusive thing, but I don' think workers actually get paid more.   We don't tip a lot by Canadian standards when we're in mexico, but $2 per meal if it's buffet style lunch/breakfast, $5 dinner.   $30 at end of week for housekeeping.

  • It's not a requirement, but it's always appreciated so much, so we always do.

I think we usually bring $100-200 in 1's and 5's and it's more than plenty for 5-6ish days.

  • Oh I want to go on a vaca :)

We tipped at meals and then for the housekeeping we left a larger tip at the end.  We probably should have done it each day though - they they would have known they were getting something and might have done a better job (although they didn't do a bad job...)

We were at an AI in Mexico...I want to go back SOOOOO bad!

  • I guess there is no rule that you have to do it, but we found that bringing a roll of singles for tipping at meals and for drinks, housekeeping, etc. went a LONG way.  Just a couple of $$ means a lot in many places and, as you will see, the people who usually work at these resorts work their butts off!  Have a great time!

Cozumel! 4 nights, starting on Friday.

How much did you tip? I feel like I'm already paying a pretty penny, but I want them to know I appreciate their hard work, kwim?

How fun, we were at Cozumel Palace a few months ago and it was great. If nothing else, tip housekeeping. They work very hard and I think the extra money means a lot to them. We always left something for our servers, too.  We had two toddlers that they very graciously put up with/cleaned up after and i wanted them to know we appreciated it.

I honestly don't remember how much but they seem to treat you much better if you show them appreciation, $$$, lol.  If I had to guess probably $5-10 for dinner, and $3-5 for breakfast/lunches.  Housekeeping, depends on how well she did!

  • Nobody at the Sandals we stayed at would take it.  There were also several postings that tipping was not required/accepted.

  • My DH tipped housekeeping daily to see if we would get better towel art depending on how we tipped.  Men are like kids!  We did, BTW!  He also thought that it was awesome that they would refill the mini fridge more than once a day with beer, etc. so he tipped them well.

We did not tip at meals.  We did have a favorite bartender that we tipped at the end of the week, but not as we went along.  That is what our resort suggested...tipping at the end of the stay to the ones that went above and beyond.

We became friends with another couple and she tipped a dollar everytime she went to the bar.  We were kind of thinking that was the nice thing about all inclusive...not having to carry money around in your bathing suit!

  • We did not tip, because you have to tip everyone, every time.  We went to an all inclusive in Mexico, and the staff lives on the resort, so you know they talk.

And the AI we went to, no one else tipped either.

I'd recommend tripadvisor.com or the like to see what's the norm at the hotel you're going to, because it can be different.

ETA:  When I say everyone, everytime, I mean if you forget and you don't tip someone, they'll feel slighted.

  • The travel agency said we didn't have to tip... But we did..

We tipped for meals and everyday alittle something for the housekeeping and room service...

We did get better service when we did tip .

  • We didn't tip anyone on the resort. They wouldn't accept tips.
  • The resort management discourage tipping b/c it keeps the workers there for low wages.  I would check Tripadvisor for what the expectations are at your resort.  Your dollars - and literally dollars - go very far in Mexico, the Caribbean, etc.  .

  • We did, but I don't think it is expected.

  • We do. Tips are usually included, but we always threw in a little more for meals, housekeeping, and luggage service. It was always very much appreciated, and I feel like it got us even better service than we would have received otherwise.
  • Yes we tip but not large amounts.  When talking to the people that work at some of the hotels we have been told how much a dollar means to them.  I always tip the guy the fills the mini bar.  If you leave a $5 in there they will give you the hook up.  You will get better service all around.

  • Are you going to an all inclusive or a super inclusive, normally tips are prohibited at the super inclusive resorts but at your discretion at all inclusive resorts.

Dumb question - is the stuff in the mini bar also included in the "all inclusive" part?

Can you tell that I'm a total vacation noob? Cause I am. :)
