Success after IF

Anyone ever have keratin treatment done (hair smoother/straightener)?

I got a straight perm once in Chinatown and it JACKED my hair up - I had a lot of color damage and it became spongy and broke off. Not attractive.

But I would love to have straighter hair that looked nice w/out blow drying/straightening. My salon does keratin treatment and I think that would work on me, but I'm scared. Anyone have any experience? Worth the $?

  • I have not had it done, but my hairdresser has done it on her hair and offers the service and swears by it.

Another friend got it done a few months ago and loved the results.

  • I know a couple friends who have done it (and loved it), but no one with hair as coarse/wavy/curly as mine. I still would love to do it myself. Interested to see what people say!
  • i did this in october and LOVED the results. it doesn't make your hair pin straight like the japanese straightener but it also does not damage your hair. in fact my hair looked so pretty and shiny.

it made blowing my hair out so much faster, like if it normally takes me 45 mins to an hour it took me 20 mins max. and when i wore my hair curly (which is the norm for me) my curls were just softer and much more manageable and there was little to no frizz. i will totally be getting it done again after i am done breastfeeding.

I'm so happy to hear you say that! I think we have really similar hair. :)

  • My mom had it done to her hair.  It looks good for about 2 months, so I'm not sure how you feel about the length of time it looks straight/non frizzy for.

Invest in a Chi iron.  You'll LOVE it.

ETA: I just looked at the last line of your post again, you DONT want to straighten it. sorry.

  • I did this in January and I loved it!  I have super thick and wavy hair. Like pp said, it doenst make it pin stralight, just healthier and easier to manage.  It takes half the time it used to blow dry nas starightne my hair. I am getting it again in June cuase its almost out so lasted like 4-5 months.  I  love it! yes its expensive but worth every penny IMO.

  • We do this at my salon. Im dying to do it but havent yet because its a pretty strong chemical and Im stolling over here from the IF board. It dosent straighten your hair, it puts a coating on your hair that makes it shiny, takes the frizz out, and makes it much easier to straighten yourself. Everyone that has it loves it. BUT! regardless of how natural your stylist may tell you it is, the main ingredient is formaldehyde. I cannot get a straight answer from any of the companies that make it how much formaldehyde is in there and that makes me a little nervous.

There are two main companies most salons use. Laz*io and Copp*ola. they both last about three-four months. The Copp*ola seems fairly mild fume wise, only downside is you cannot shampoo for three days. The Laz*io you can shampoo after a day but the fumes are so strong I wont let anyone do it until after 4 so the fumes dont linger. I get a headache and a sore throat from it and we have to open the door and use a fan when the Laz*io is being used.

With all that being said it is a great product as far as what it does to your hair and everyone that does it loves it and does it again. The price varies so much - definitely call around to compare. Its a very expensive product to order but some salons are charging 600 + and its not THAT expensive.

there are systems that do not uses formaldehyde. my friend is a stylist and did this for me in my home. i saw the full box for the chemicals and did research online about the system she used (now of course i have no idea what the name is) and it was formaldehyde free. it obviously had other chemicals though but the scent was not that strong, almost like banana boat on steroids.

  • I have super curly hair, but it's very fine, but frizzy if I don't put something in it.  I've had it professionally straightened about 4 times and I love it each time.  It makes my hair slightly wavy, and way easier to flat iron.  I don't know about the keratin treatment though.

I'm actually thinking about having it straightened again before it gets too hot.  IMO, definitely worth the $$.

  • Coppola makes the one at has no formaldehyde.  I had this done 3 times last year and am actually going on Saturday.  It makes my life so much easier with the baby!  I got it when I was pregnant too and right before I had Luke to make coming home from the hospital easier.  I can dry my very long curly hair in 10 minutes with it.  I don't have tight curls but they are fluffy.  This makes my hair so soft and smooth.  I absolutely love it and am addicted to  it. It lasts a good 4 months for me until I have to break out the straightener.  I highly recommend it.  It gives me that dry and go hair I never ever though I could have!
