Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What do you all think? re:weaning from BF

I know I ultimately have to make the decision, but would like your thoughts on the topic. We aren't starting solids until DS in 6 months (have a month to go) and have been BF 90% of the time with a formula bottle once or twice a day. I got sick and the meds have decreased my supply dramatically. So much that most of the time I have to give DS a bottle after he nurses. I stopped taking the meds (cough suppressant) and my supply has only increased a little. So do I try to get my supply back to only cut back down in a month when we start solids? WWYD?

thanks in advance ladies!

  • work your supply back up.  You might find that the decrease in what he wants to drink when you first introduce solids isn't as dramatic as you think.

  • I would say do not get your supply back up.  I had a terrible time stopping pumping/BF.  It was extremly painful and took forever.  So if you're going to stop in a month, it may take you that long to slow down your production.  Maybe it was just me, but it took me forever and it was painful!
  • If your plan is to stop in a month then (if it were me) I would start the weaning process now.

This exactly.  It's a huge PITA to try and increase your supply (in my experience anyway).  Now if you were planning on BFing past 6 months then it's really a personal decision.  I missed BFing a lot at first but I'm definitely enjoying the freedom now.

  • Baby's main source of nutrition will still be from either nursing or formula for a while, even after they start solids - so you may not really even be "cutting back" on breast/bottle-feeding.

If you don't feel ready to wean yet, then try to build your supply back up and see how it goes.  My supply dropped at 7.5 months unexpectedly (well, unexpectedly at the time and then I got my first PP period, which I think was the cause) and it was hard trying to get it back up, so it felt like a "natural" time for me to wean DS.  It didn't hurt at all and he had an easy transition to FF.

  • Your LO will still need most of the nutrition from either BM or formula for the first year.  Just because you are starting solids doenst mean there will be a drastic decrease in the amount of milk needed.  If your goal was only to go for 6 months then by all means you can start to wean but remember you will have to suppliment with formula.  If you want to keep going after 6 months get the supply back up.  Bring baby to breast every hour if you can and pump pump pump.

  • You will not be cutting down on how much the baby nurses when you introduce solids.

Solids are just for practice.  Their main source of nutrition is BM (or formula).

  • thanks ladies, still not sure what I will do, probably try to increase it but not really sure yet. Thanks for all the help!
