Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how do I get them to baby-proof?

Hey ladies

I have an interesting dilemma. I've been providing daycare for my friend and former boss for the past 8 months, their LO is now 11 months. I used to watch them at my place, but when we moved it became more convenient for them to have me come to theirs.

Their apt. isn't babyproofed at all. I surely have my work cut out for me with 9 month and 11 month old boys cruising around here. Obviously it's my job to watch them, but even with one this would be a nightmare and I have having to put older mobile babies in the exersaucer while I feed or change the other.

Anyway, there are a lot of dangers. Tall shelves with heavy, sharp & breakable items, exposed wires in multiple locations and the whole place is covered in dust. They don't seem to care when their LO gets into these things and I'm worried it'll take him getting hurt to change things.

Any suggestions on how to hint to them that they need to babyproof?

  • I would talk to them and be honest.  They are your employers and should provide a clean, safe work place.  good luck.

  • I would definetly bring it up to them, maybe mention all the things you did to babyproof your home? Maybe they dont realize how dangerous it is because they arent with thier son all day? I would mention it and also point out these things are a danger for your son also. Tell them you would feel more comfortable bringing your son there if it was baby proofed, or go back to watching thier lo at your place?

If it was me, I would be uncomfortable with it since its my lo thats there all day too.

totally this.   It doesn't currently sound like a safe place and god forbid anything happen on your watch.  What sort of liability does that put you under?

  • Thanks ladies.

I think the hard part is that when we first started they said "oh yeah we haven't babyproofed" and I don't know if that means they're going to eventually or what...

What boggles my mind is I only watch their son 12 hours a week. The dad is here the rest of the time and I guess with just him they don't care if he gets into stuff. Maybe I should have them babysit my LO so they can see how hard it is to keep track of two movers in this place at once!

I do want to be straightforward but I also don't want to compromise my position with them. The mom is actually my former boss from my previous 8-5 job, maybe that's why I can't bring myself to confront her!

  • You might ask that they baby proof one room so that you have a safe zone or recommend babysitting at your place since it is more baby friendly.  Bring up your concerns (wires, breakables, etc) but realize they are not going to be super excited but might be more open seeing what your actual concerns are.
