Toddlers: 24 Months+

So, who potty trains using m&m's.. ?

I know that our mom PT'd my sis and I using them (the ol' 1 for a pee, 2 for a poop standard...). And I know DS looooves them and doesn't get them too often, so I thought what the heck, I told him how he'd get 1 m&m when he pees on the potty (told him this when he was on the potty) and he was all 'OOOKKK!!!'... so now he asks to sit on the potty (and we do our usual, me reading all his requested fave books til he's ready to get off - never any pee though!) and when he hops off, he incessantly asks for an NEMINEM! I say 'we only get one if we pee pee in the potty, maybe you will next time!'- in a very positive upbeat way.. kind of like, I am so glad you sat there and tried, but maybe next time... but he still shadows me for a good 10 minutes saying 'neminem pleeease mommy!!'..

So I am rethinking this method!!!  I really only did it bc I heard so many others used it with success, and we're not really potty training seriously right now, it's more of a 'you want to sit on the potty? sure ok... no pee? ok, maybe next time then!' ...

  • Well, we used them, but we also did the 3 day potty training, so I didn't use them FOR her to go, it was just a treat once she did. Of course after the first time getting one, she knew, but that first time was pretty much all it took for her to start going on the potty, or at least finish on the potty.
  • Loading the player...
  • The M&Ms method quickly backfired on us, too.  She'd sit down and then instantly jump up and beg for an "Emm-ee-nah" for like 10 minutes afterwards!

I have no advice, really.  We're still struggling with PT, although she's getting better at telling us when she has to go and actually following through with it.  Good luck! :)

  • I have a huge, flourescent chart in our bathroom that outlines the reward system:

Sit on potty= choose a game to play with mommy

Pee in potty= 1 potty candy

Poop in potty= potty candy AND TV show

    lots ofcolorful pics!

  • We do the big guns - a jellybean for a pee, and a Peep for a poop (I loaded up after Easter) - he is VERY motivated by candy and usually never has it,  so I figured it was a good idea.

We were giving him a mini-marshmallow every time he "tried" (he was very resistant/negative about the potty for a while and this helped), but we are in the midst of the 3 day bootcamp right now and we had to stop, because he was running in to try eveyr 5 seconds and just wanting a marshmallow. So, now if he tries and nothing happens he can get a sticker on his chart (if he wants, he usually doesn't care now), a pee is a jellybean, a poop is a Peep, and 2 days in a row dry and clean = a new Thomas Train.

We are on Day 2 and so far so good - I have my fingers crossed that it keeps up!

Weaning him off the candy once he is fully potty trained will be a pain, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it Big Smile

  • In my opinion, you should not reward with food.  Praise your child for doing something good.  Even if they don't go, tell them good job, we'll try again it a little bit.  We had a huge celebration every time she went.  I'm talking clapping, jumping up and down, high-5's and giving rock.  The huge smile on her face was her reward and mine too.

  • I used them for about a day before I realized I was eating them all. I changed after that to stickers.
  • I read a great book about rewarding dry-ness.  So, you have to load them up on as much liquid as you can, stay home for at least 3 days and then check the diaper every 20 minutes.  You can also put a diaper on the dolly or teddy bear and check the bear (one treat for staying dry, yay!) and then check the kiddo (one treat for staying dry, yay!) and then the bear sits on the potty, pour a little water sneakily in the back and bear gets another treat for going pee pee.  Kiddo sits on teh potty, if there's liquid, then another treat for going pee pee.  if no potty in the toilet, try again in like 5 minutes.  Sometimes the bear might get it and the kiddo might not, but I wonder if it might work better?  I have no idea from personal experience yet though.  But that's what we're going to try.
