Different spelling of boy's name (Clicky Poll)

We chose the name Lane/Layne if we have a boy.  We have never heard of or even met anyone with that name except for deceased rock star Layne Staley.  We like the uniqueness of Layne.

Let me know what you think!

The name is NMS to begin with but, the y makes it way too feminine for me.

  • A childhood friend of my brother is called Lane.  Super cool guy.
  • To me Layne would not be pronounced the same as Lane.  I would say Layne= Lay-ne

ETA: Unless of course that is the pronunciation you are going for.  In that case I wouldn't use Lane than.  I would pronounce Lane=Lane like a road.road.

  • I've met 2 male Lane's (both spelled without the y). I think the y makes it look feminine.
  • The "y" makes me think of a girl. If you really don't want to spell in Lane, what about Laine?

  • I know a girl Layne, so I voted for Lane.

  • im not a fan of different spellings for normal names. i would go with Lane
  • I think the name itself is unique enough that you don't really need to change the spelling.  Also, the "y" makes it girly.

I agree with this. When I see Layne I sound it out as Lay-ne. Where as when i see Lane its just lane.

  • I also know a female Layne, so would definitely go with Lane for a boy.

  • I'm usually not a fan of different spellings and the y does not make it seem girly too me but maybe that's because I'm a huge AIC fan.  Also though, it is pronounced slightly differently than Lane, you actually hear the y.

    Ditto.

  • I have only ever seen Layne used for girls.  I would go with Lane.

  • I knew a Lane in college.  Although NMS, I like it better without the Y.

  • I really like it! But Layne is a girl name to me so I would stick with Lane.

  • Definitely Lane.

Reminds me of Lane Meyer (Better off Dead- John Cusack, swoon).

    I like the name!

  • I like Lane, we had it on ourl ist for boys too, but a friend of ours just had a little boy and named him Lane, so it was out for us. But I liked it because of Lane Frost the bull rider. (8 Seconds) Big Smile
  • I love the name Lane...spelled that way! Our son's middle name is Lane after Lane Frost (I'm a sucker for cowboys)!
  • I like Layne. Are you naming him after Layne Staley?

I know a girl Layne so I think that is why I lean more towards 'Lane' for a boy :-)
