I just got some hand me downs and they reek of moth balls. Washed them twice and the smell is still there. Any idea on how to get the smell out?

Put some white vinegar in the wash with them. That should hopefully neutralize the smell.

Just wash 'em on a "heavy" cycle or a few more times. We has DS's clothes in storage w/ mothballs and I had to do this... it will come out.
