Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hate/Love the Bjorn: Need alternatives

I hate our bjorn because it KILLS my shoulders, but I love have DS face out..I'm thinking about alternatives because we live in a city where often a stroller is difficult to use. Everyone raves about the Ergo but the baby faces in...anyone tried the Cybex carrier?

Also, DS is around 20lbs..if I shell out some dough for a new carrier, how long will it really last, i.e. will baby want to be carried?

I was trying to think of a way to jimmy rig the bjorn to evenly distribute the weight..hmmm

  • The Bjorn isn't good for a baby's hips because they're being suspended by their crotch.  The Ergo is great, but like you said, it doesn't face out.

I have a Maya ring sling that I love.  She can face out, in, be carried on my hip, cradled, etc.  It was less expensive as well, and will work well for my son when he's born.

  • A fellow bumpie sent me a baby ktan. It looks super comfy, not sure if this is what you are looking for but check it out.
  • I have a Beco and like to wear him on my back.  I feel like he can see more that way.  You can't face out with the Beco forward.

the baby k'tan is better for lighter babies. i have one, but i haven't used it since DS was 5 months (he's 8.5 months now). i have a bad back, and it doesn't provide a lot of support.

the baby can still see in the Ergo, and my DS loves it. maybe you could try it and see how your baby likes it before ruling it out b/c i think it's the best carrier ever! :)

  • I love my Manduca but again, he faces in. You can do a back carry though.

I hear facing out isn't great for their hips/spine.

  • I still use my Moby and DS still loves it...he's almost 20 lbs and 7 mos.
  • a hip carry is a good alternative to facing out - can be done with a wrap, ergo or mei tei.  a high back carry is another good alternative...cant do a high carry with an ergo so i would suggest a mei tei (that way you can do a hip carry and high back carry).

i also have a kokopax carrier and it is absolutely great for high back carries and is very easy to put on.

  • DH still carries DD in the bjorn but my back/shoulders can't take it. I either back carry her with the ergo (if I'm doing work) or hip carry in a ring sling if we're out shopping/walking around. Both carriers are comfortable and DD is a little over 20 lbs. She absolutely hates any type of front carry not facing out but enjoys the hip/back carries.

  • If I was doing it over I would have bought a piccolo.  But I do love the ergo for the comfort of the back carry.  I *know* it can do a hip carry, but tried once and didn't find it comfortable, although I may not have done it correctly.
