Feedings for a preemie

Alright, I know this is probably a case-by-case thing, but I want to make sure my LO is getting enough.

My little man has been gaining about an ounce a day, which I think is great! I just need to make sure we are feeding him enough. He came home eating 2 ounces every 4 hours most of the time. Sometimes it would be a bit less. Lately he's been eating 2 ounces every 3 hours, and 2 feedings he'll demand a bit more so we'll give him another half ounce which satisfies him. I am guessing he won't eat as much as a term baby yet, but I need to know that 14 to 15 oz a day is plenty for him or if I should try to feed him more.

My poor body isn't producing but 12 ounces a day, so I will have to supliment with formula soon :(

Re: Feedings for a preemie

  • Are you EPing or bfing or some combination? The key is to just let him tell you what he wants. Anytime he wants more, give it to him. DS came home eating 2 oz. (37w adjusted) an went up to 70mL within one week or so, and then every 2-3 weeks we were adding 10mL to his night time bottle until he stuck around at 4 oz for a long while. kellymom.com has a chart somewhere that says the range of how much a baby typically eats (of bm). GL!

  • I am EPing. He hasn't gotten the hang of BFing. Thank you for your response. Will isn't too far off from your LO and he will be 38 weeks adjusted tomorrow. I figure as long as he is gaining weight (which he is) and has a wet and dirty diaper each change then he is doing okay. He does let us know when 2 oz isn't enough.

I hope my body can catch up to him, but if not then I have already accepted having to supliment with formula. I just home his tummy can handle the formula if it is needed. One day at a time, that's what I'm trying to live by right now.

  • Are you still trying to bf? It is still possible if you're interested. If EPing is working for you, I'm not trying to disrupt that! I just wanted to let you know that there are success stories of moving from EPing to EBF even at his age/adjusted age. You're doing great - you're exactly right about the weight and wet/dirty diapers.
  • I am trying to BF about once a day but so far it seems i am a passifier. I havent given up yet and will try more next week. This week was the first week he didn;t scream bloody murder when putting him to breast.
  • Your baby and mine are the same real age and gestational age.  Lily is eating right at 2 ozs (sometimes a little less) every 2.5-3 hours.  Her pedi said yesterday to not let her have more than 2 ozs at a time right now since she is a spitter and she tends to spit up when she eats more.  I also EP because she refuses to latch on.  I try 2x a day but she just cries or refuses to open her mouth.
