Let's talk convertible carseats

What type/brand convertible carseat do you have or will be buying for LO when he/she grows out of the infant carrier?  DH and I had the Graco Nautilus 3-1 on our registry and we were going to buy it but now we are considering the Complete Air Convertible Carseat.

  • I'm sure this is a stupid question, but you'll have to forgive b/c I haven't researched this yet...

When do babies outgrow their infant carrier and move up to the next carseat?

Depends on you car seat. Mine is 35 pounds.

  • Depends on your carseat...the Graco Snugride 32 goes up to 32 lbs and the regular I believe is 25.  What kind of carseat do you have?

The regular Graco Snugride goes up to 22lb and 29".  However, I think we will move LO to a convertible seat around 5 months or so.  I have no desire to carry her around in a carrier up to 22lb.  We are planning on getting either the Graco My Ride 65 or the Complete Air.

  • 6-12 lurker (sorry I keep replying but 6-12 is sooo slow)

We have the Evenflo Triumph, which goes to 40 lb/40 inches forward facing (35 lb rear facing), its very easy to use and is consistently rated among the top seats at a much better price ($140-150).

DD moved into her converable seat at 7 mo. The weight limit was 22 lb and she was only 19 lb, however the height limit was 29 inches and she had very nearly reached it. Most babies will outgrow by height before weight. Or they will just get too ridiculously heavy that you won't want to carry in a carseat. Once they hit 6 or 7 mo and are able to sit in shopping carts, high chairs etc, the convertable seat really is easier to use.

ETA: posted a weight limit wrong, corrected

  • We'll buy a second Britax Marathon.

We moved DD1 into a convertible at four months. She was nowhere near the seat limit, but just looked squished and uncomfortable and so we moved her. I like the infant seat when they're little (we have a Snugride), but the Britax is so much better designed/easier to take them in and out of when they reach that stage.

  • We have the Evenflo Triumph for DS. It is one of the highest rated convertible carseats and the price is right as well. The only issue people have with it is that it is a little bulky. We love it, though.

We moved DS to his when he was 6 months old. He was getting a little long for his infant carseat. We'll probably do the same thing with DD. When she gets too long for the seat, we'll switch.

  • We dont have infant seats we went straight into convertibles. We have a First Years True Fit in each car.

  • I am gonna get whichever one rear-faces for the longest. I think the My Ride 65 RF up to 35pds (could be wrong) so that's a strong contender. I like the Nautilus because it looks so awesome, but I'm not sure it'll fit in our truck RF. Ideally, Simon would RF until college! :) Obv, I will be doing more research when the time comes.

I have considered Britax, but I almost feel like a chump going that way, don't know why.

  • Like many others, we have the Evenflo Triumph for DD.  We had her rear facing in it until she was a little over 18 months (when we got fed up having to fight with her every single time she had to be put in the seat).  It can rear face until 35 lbs though if needed.  We will be getting the same kind of seat for DS when he needs it.

We'll be moving DS out of the infant seat as soon as he can sit up on his own in things like shopping carts and highchairs.  Those infant seats get heavy quickly and are a pain in the a** to haul around once LO is more than a few months old.

I feel the same way, but my parents bought it so we're just going to use it. I think the Britax is "the" car seat yet it's not really any better than any other convertible. Trendy$$$$ =/= better.

This is what we have as well.  I only wish it was easier to adjust the straps, but I know it is good for safety.
