Reintroduce Dairy=FAIL!

So my LC asked me to try to reintroduce dairy in order to see what kind of formula down the road DS may take.  I am going away for 4 days and although I plan on pumping enough, I need to leave my MIL with formula just in case.

Well, DS is having the worst day because I had cheese twice in the past two days.  Poor little guy is SO uncomfortable!  What should I do?  I have tried Mylicon drops, a bath, massaging his tummy, taking walks with him upright.  He just keeps screaming!  I don't know what else to do to help him.

Has anyone had this kind of experience with reintroducing dairy?  I am worried that it is going to take a long time to get it out of his system!

Re: Reintroduce Dairy=FAIL!

  • The only side effect my DD has from Dairy is green diapers.  I accidently had dairy on Tuesday (I did not know chicken crispers had milk in the batter) and her diapers are just now starting to go back to normal so it was about three days.

  • yesterday I had an ice cream cone and I think my DD is constipated from it.  I do FF a little also, but I think the BM gave her the constipation.  I feel so bad.  She hasn't gone #2 all day.  I'm surprised she hasn't been more cranky.  She's been sleeping a lot so I'm kind of scared about what tonight is going to bring.  I ate another ice cream cone today and now I want to kick myself cause I figured it out after the fact.   Poor DD.  Mommy needs to cut out the sweets/dairy.

  • Hmmm dairy must affect everyone's lo differently. I have at least one glass of milk per day plus various other dairy - and DS hasn't had any issues. Normal, yellow seedy breastmilk diapers and no constipation.

  • Heres my opinion...

There is a reason your baby's body is rejecting dairy. Humans bodies are not meant to digest cows milk, thats why so many people are lactose intolerant. Try soy formula instead.

  • 6-12 lurker with a LO with the milk protein intolerance/allergy

Has your LO been diagnosed with the milk protein intolerance? If so, I'm very surprised that your dr had you reintroduce dairy already. 6 weeks is when my LOs symptoms really started and it typically doesn't go away until 6-12 mo. My LO is 10 mo old now and I tried giving her mashed potatoes (made with reg milk) last week and she had green poop for 2 days (very abnormal for her), so hers still hasn't gone away.

If you want to have back up formula on hand, I would leave a hypoallergenic formula, such as Alimentum. About half of all babies with the milk protein allergy also have a soy allergy.

As far as BF, it can take up to 2 weeks for the milk to leave your system, but I would with a anticipate a small amount, such as a couple pieces of cheese, you would see improvements in a couple days. I was able to keep BF dairy-free until my supply completely died a few weeks away. DD is on soy formula and I was able to test that by drinking it myself in increasing amounts and then BF (and saw no response). Anyways, sorry for the lengthy response. Good luck!
