Checking how dilated you are?

I was just doing my usual googling and I had no idea you could check how dilated you are on your own. I told my cousin and she said her OB did mention it to her once because she wasn't able to feel her contractions. All you have to do is clip your nails, wash your hands in warm water, and depending on how many fingers go in, that's how dilated you are. I am personally too scared! How about you ladies? Would you try this?

    When my mom was pregnant her Dr. actually made her learn how to check b/c she never could carry babies to term and didn't have contractions until it was too late.

    When we check patients in the hospital, we use a sterile gloved hand. I would be really apprehensive about a person with no experience doing this type of check on themselves, as the risk of infection would be so high :/

    I promise you 100% it's not this simple.  I'm an L&D nurse, and nurses and doctors spend a loooong time training and honing this skill.  For an OB to suggest to a patient that she check her own dilation is the weirdest thing I've heard in a long time.  Really, don't go sticking your fingers up there, leave it to the professionals.

    This. And really - unless you have previously (for who knows what reason) been checking yourself, and know what it feels like to be at zero progress....how on earth could you possibly know what it feels like to be at 3 cm...or 2....or 4? You can't just go sticking your fingers somewhere and assume you're going to *magically* know something that doctors and nurses have to spend so much time training to know.

    At this point, I can barely get my hand down there to wipe.  Nevermind trying to get all up in there to check my cervix.

    *Butting in* Why would you use a sterile glove? The vagina is not a sterile environment.

    Checking the cervix is performed as a sterile procedure to prevent harmful bacteria from being introduced into the vagina. The bacteria can grow and travel, and if the patient ruptures, it can ultimately lead to chorioamnionitis. If you are sterile, your risk of introducing bacteria that doesn't belong in there is minimal.

    I would be completely skeptical of my Dr. if he told me that. I know you're not going to do it but what type of Dr would *want* their patient to do this?
