I need some recommendations on baby slings and wraps. I have had a ring sling but didn't really like it and have never had a wrap. what is best for newborns etc.
What's best is really a matter of personal preference ;-)
Lots of folks like stretchy wraps like the moby or balibaby stretch (the BBS is thinner and more supportive) for newborns. I'm a woven wrap person myself - lots of info on those in my siggy.
A mei tai would be another option - smaller bodied MTs like the babyhawk or kozy are best for newborns.
What kind of ring sling did you have? A different type of shoulder might work better for you and be easier to use. I like the SBP slings - sleepingbaby.net. A RS isn't ever as hands free feeling as a wrap or MT IMO though.
I'm not terribly educated about wraps and slings like some of the ladies on here (the FSOT boards that are always talked about make me dizzy), but I have a few different carriers and can speak from personal experience.
I loved (and DS loved) the moby (wrap) as a newborn. He would sleep forever in it, it was very comfortable for me. It got to be a bit hot in the summer, though. I have a woven wrap also, which I don't find as comfortable, but was cooler. But I'm not very experienced with wraps so it could just be user error. I did almost always front carries with wraps, though. I wasn't confident enough to do back carries, which probably would have been more comfortable as DS got heavier.
I had a bjorn which I hated. It hurt my back within like 3 minutes.
I have an Ergo now which has been great as DS got bigger. He was 20 pounds by 5-6 months so that's about when I switched from the moby/woven wrap to the Ergo. DH likes the ergo also, it's the only wearing he'll do besides our Kelty backpack carrier. I also have a mei-tai type carrier which I like a lot for quick things, it's a little less bulky than an ergo.
