3rd Trimester

38 weeks and no dilation or effacement.

I keep reading posts about people who are weeks behind me in terms of their pregnancy but they are already so many cm dilated and effaced. I had my first internal this week (38 weeks) and nada. Just a happy little head.

What does that mean in terms of me going into labor? How quickly can I go from zero to hero? Wink Am I 'doomed' to be overdue? I was really hoping for an April baby or at least to give birth before Mother's Day.

Re: 38 weeks and no dilation or effacement.

  • I was zero zilch nada at my 38 week appt, and then this week I was 2 cm and 50% effaced.  None of it means anything!  Just that a process has begun.

You could give birth tonight!  Good Luck and Labor Dust to you.  You will be a Mommy in no time :)

  • You can go all the way in a day, I'm only 1cm and have been for several weeks with no effacement so I feel your pain, but I just keep telling myself that it means nothing. You could go into labor tomorrow with no previous progress.

  • This is my first baby- so of course, what do I really know?  BUT- I'm pretty sure that some women dilate at a very rapid rate and others might dilate early and then be stuck there for weeks & weeks!  I don't think you're doomed :)  Sending labor dust your way!

My EDD's on Sunday and nada for me. Sad I was hoping for a VBAC and am looking at a repeat C.  That said, there are some things you can do to help the process--walking a lot, doing the deed, taking evening primrose oil (some say you can insert the capsules...in a different orifice, but I'm not down with that plan), exercise...crazy foods you can try--eggplant parmesan, collard greens (worked with DD but not with DS).  But right now, all you can do is wait.  I'm pulling for you (and your cervix, though).  My misery wants NO company!  GL!

  • I had the same news this week and I even cried, lol. I like the responses you've gotten so far. Labor dust to us both!
  • Labor dust all around!!!!!!! Labor Dust
  • I'm a former labor and delivery nurse.  More times then not first time moms would come in at only 1cm and be in active labor and had been for a while. I have no doubt that they were closed before labor started.
  • Thanks chicagoshannon. Hearing that makes me a LOT more hopeful Big Smile
