Winter heating and Baby.

It's getting pretty cold up here in the upper Midwest. Just wondering what tips you might have to keep baby warm this winter while keeping the heating bill reasonable.

What do you keep your thermostat at?

Re: Winter heating and Baby.

  • We keep ours at 64 at night, like 67 when we're home during the day.  We have oil base board heat and it's gets super hot.  We'll see how it goes when the baby gets here.  I'm thinking that we'll have to keep it a little warmer.  I'm gonna try not to be crazy and think that the baby is cold all the time.  We've already had our heat on here this year.

  • a long sleeve onsie, a t-shirt then a sweatshirt, not sox then pants and 2 pairs of socks!!! jk

DS is a sweat box... I think I have to worry more about me than him!!! I don't know what I am gonna do... I will have to shut my Florida Room up and probably play in the basement because the rest of the house is hardwood floors. I guess we could always use a space heater- but DS will be crawling around by then.

  • We keep ours at 60 during the night.  Haylie sleeps in an undershirt, footed pjs, then a sleep sack.  She stays nice and toasty

  • I was actually just reading that it is fine to keep your home around 72 degrees, especially when the baby is sleeping.  Higher temps are associated with a higher SIDS risk, and babies can become overheated easily.  72 is about what we normally keep our thermostat set to, so we plan to just make adjustments in what she is wearing or being swaddled in to help regulate her temp.

  • Good post. I've been wondering about this same thing b/c it's getting cold at night here in the Northeast as well. We keep our heat pretty low and will of course raise it for the baby, but if we kept it above 68 I think we'd go bankrupt.

Last year we spent $300-$400 a month to keep it at 62 when we were home and 55 when we were out for the day. We've moved to a new apartment which seems to have *slightly* better windows so I'm hoping that helps a bit.

  • I have no idea what we are going to do at this point. We normally have it set to 65 right now at night a 70 during the day when we are not here. I am concerned that the baby will be cold...we will probably compromise or wrap the baby up good. I had the thermostat at 68 one night and I was sweating which definitely is not something that i want to get used to.

  • I just read over the weekend in a magazine that the ideal temp for baby is between 68-72 degrees.

  • Up here (PacNW) we always have our heater on...It just doesn't always need to run!  (Okay, we turned it off for maybe a couple weeks during the summer, but that's it!  We still needed it at night almost all summer.)

Anyway, since DS was born, we now keep it at 70.
