Peanut butter

When did you start giving your child peanut products and/or peanut butter?  Our son is almost 2 and so far he hasn't had any peanuts.  I can't remember if I need to wait until 2 or 3.  We have no history of food allergies in our family.  I *think* his ped said wait until 2 unless there is a family history in which case wait until 3 but I can't remember and always wonder what others do.

Thanks!

Re: Peanut butter

  • DD's pediatrician told us to wait until DD was 3 to give her peanut butter. There is no history of any peanut allergies in our family.

  • DD has been having peanut butter since 15 months. No nuts for choking reasons, obviously. My pedi cleared peanut butter at a year but I misunderstood so ended up waiting longer. She has no allergies and we have no food allergies in the family.

  • Gisele has had peanut butter since she was 17 months old or so- I talked to her pedi about it- she needed the extra calories/fat. she is on the low end of the charts with weight.

there is a small family history of allergies (shellfish) but I honestly really didn't give it much thought/credit.

she eats regular nuts too- she chews them just fine.

  • I believe I gave all 3 kids peanut butter around 1 year. It's a huge staple in our home now that picky eating behaviors have surfaced. Anyway, isn't it weird that pediatricians' advice on when to start varies so much?

  • DD has been eating peanut butter since at least 18 months -- I don't remember exactly when I started giving it to her.  It's one of the very few foods she will eat.

  • We started giving it around 18 months, I think. My pedi told us to do what we were comfortable with, since we have no history of allergies. She said that there is so much conflicting information out there and that every pedi will tell you something different, so she couldn't give us a "don't try until..." date.

Also, by 18 months I figured I was more comfortable giving it to him at home and watching him the first few times, rather than worry about him accidentally eating something with nuts while on a playdate, out and about, etc.

  • DD had homemade banana nut bread (I picked out chunks of nuts, but she definitely had little specs of them) around 9 months, and has had peanut butter several times since then.  She just doesn't like it.  I've tried quite a few times to give her almond butter or PB&J, and she just isn't interested.

I really believe that unless there is a strong family history of allergies, then waiting until 2 or 3 is completely unnecessary, and may actually cause allergies.

  • since she was a year old and i breast feed our infant and eat peanut butter all the time so he is already exposed.
  • We started giving PB at 1yo, no problems.
  • We started at 1 year as well.  He LOVES it!!
  • Ds got it for the first time around 11 months.  He was fine the first time.  The second time he reacted horribly and I had to rush him to the pedi.  Needless to say, a peanut allergy was born.  Apparently the allergy doesn't show the first time they eat it but will the second and the third time can be life threatening.  Ds will never have any peanut product ever again in his life if there is anything I can do about it.

Same here and I'm so thankful because it was the only protein she ingested most days.  Took her forever to like beans, roast chicken, deli meat, meatballs, and she still doesn't like milk.

  • We have no hx of allergies and I gave them pb around 10 months.  No problems and we have some every day.  My friend's pedi told her the issue wasn't so much with age as it was with choking on the sticky texture.

  • My ped has cleared the kids for peanut butter at 1YO. DS is 16 months and I gave him peanut butter about 2 months ago.

DD#1 was closer to 2 when I started because she had food issues, and DD#2 was around 16 months........DD#2 is the only one who hates eating PB.

my DS was breastfed as well and I ate peanut butter all the time pregnant & breastfeeding. We have no family history of any allergies whatsoever and he is still deathly allergic to peanuts (and most tree nuts!). So the breastfeeding exposure does not always mean there are no allergies. Just FYI.

  • Ummmmm... my pediatrician suggested I give my son peanut butter toast for breakfast or snacks at 8 months... which I have and he loves it.
  • I started giving it to him around 14-15 months.  There's no history of allergies on either side of the family and he did fine with it.
  • We were going to hold out as long as possible, but gave her peanut something (can't remember what) around 15 months.  She did fine so we started serving it in sandwiches, etc, after that.

Sunflower butter is an excellent substitute for peanut butter if you're waiting but want a healthy, high-calorie protein.

  • I gave it to DS at 1 yr spread very thin. I was a peanut butter addict while pregnant and still eat it at least oncea day while bfing.

  • Both of mine had it around 12 mos.  Someone gave my DS a granola bar w/nuts in it when he was around 9 mos. I wasn't terribly thrilled with it but he was fine. I didn't let him have anymore until he was 12 mos at least though.
  • He hasn't had any yet. Our pedi said no to PB until three years old, even with no family history of allergies.
