I'm a lurker - not a multiple preggo - but I have only had one ultrasound at 7 weeks and they used a pocket doppler (exactly like the one I have at home) - at 14 weeks..
This morning - DH and I were laying in bed doing our usual morning hb check - and LO's heartbeat was in its usual spot but sounded a bit different.. was very strong - but almost had another echo.. DH said it sounded like two.. so I started moving around.. and I found two area's about 3" apart with two different BPM's..
I could very well be letting my doppler play tricks on me - DH has twins all over his side of the fam.. and I have a few but they're farther back in the tree..
I know it wasn't my hearbeat.. because my bpm's usually in the 90's.. and the two were at 135 and 150..
the nurse that listened in at 14 weeks found the hb in the same spot I always do.. so there wasn't much moving around or thoughts to check for another..My doctor is quick and to the point - so our 7 week ultra sound was like.. there it is. snap a pic .. and over and done.
Has anyone's dr. missed the fact that you were carrying twins? Am I completely hallucinating? at 16weeks+ would there be without a doubt symptoms that would tell me for sure I'm having twins?
Re: Did anyone's dr. not see twins at 7 weeks?
There is no way the doctor could have missed my twins at our 7 week u/s. They both very clearly showed up and we saw both hearts beating. I don't know what others experiences are though, but there was no denying there were two. Here is the pic of the u/s so you can see they are rather large.

If they were mono/di, one could be missed, though it's unlikely. You could only see two of our three at one time at 7 weeks.
I'd think it'd be worth just mentioning it to your doctor, who knows?

My blog * We made the national news!
We saw both of ours at 5w6d, but we did IVF and the doc was looking for two.
I will say the first time my OB used the doppler on me, he picked up both heartbeats in one place, and had to move it around to differentiate the two.
Congrats on your pregancy either way!
(Oh, and twins on your H's tree won't genetically impact your likelihood of having twins.)
Our twins were obvious on u/s at 6w4d. As for the symptom thing, I don't have any symptoms, except for tiredness. You can't diagnose a multiple pregnancy based on having more symptoms. I break the mould on that one. Good luck with your u/s!
There were obviously 2 sacs on my first ultrasound at 6w4d, that being said I have a friend whose dr missed her twins and they were discovered after her dad, an OB, insisted she was growing too fast and get another u/s at 12w.
I don't want to give you false hope because there is probably just 1, but hey, it's happened!
Steal my kids picture or pretend they are yours, I will find where you live and ship all of their dirty diapers to your doorstep. Promise.

My first u/s was at 17 weeks - which was when my triplets were discovered.
My doctor did use a doppler at my appointments at 9 weeks and 13 weeks and only picked up one HB (or what they thought was one HB.)
