Really, really restless sleeper. Help please!

DS is such a restless sleeper. It's awful. He's been down since 7ish. But is already working on his second wakeup of the evening. When he's not up, he's flopping around in his crib, 1/2 fussing, 1/2 sleeping. He gets about 20 minutes of every hour of really good, solid, deep sleep. It goes on like this until 2-3am. Then he will take a bottle and sleep soundly until 6-6:30. I have tried giving him a bottle during his first wakeups and I've tried skipping it..only offering it for some, but not others...makes no difference. The only wake up that really seems huner related is the 2-3am. I'm fine with that, if that was the only one. And if he slept soundly otherwise. But he doesn't. He will self-sooth (ususally), but I really want him to sleep better. And, frankly, even if I don't have to go "help" him, it disrupts my sleep. He's a year old and I'm still getting up every hour or two...

Any suggestions? (CIO won't make a difference, since he generally calms himself)

  • Have you tried keeping him up a little later? I know with DD I will feed her dinner about 6:30, we will play till about 7, take a bath, drink a bottle and after all that she is passed out by like 8 pm - 8:30 at the latest. But she sleeps all night till I wake her up at 6:30. She also is only taking one nap a day tho.

Ah, yes. Sadly, no go. IF I'm able to keep him up without a major meltdown, it doesn't make a difference...the first 6-7 hours of his night are a mess regardless. But thank you :) I appreciate the suggestion!

  • When DS gets this way he has an ear infection.  Have you tried a dose of Mortin?

Ear infection was my first thought, too.  Ear infection pain is the worst at bed time and shortly thereafter, but by morning eases to almost nothing.  How long has he been restless like this?  I'd take him to the pedi either way, just to ensure something isn't bothering him.  That's definitely not a normal sleep pattern.
