Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Scariest moment as a mother yet (long)

So he is okay now - but today was awful.

I got a call around 10:30 from daycare. She told me to come get Monk and take him to the doctor because he had hives all over his body. She also didn't have any benadryl to give him. I left work right away.

At this point I was worried, but not freaking out. The drive to daycare seemed to take 3X as long. I got stopped at the light right in front of the daycare. You can't see the actual building because it is blocked by trees. I noticed a flashing light just barely peaking through the trees. I thought to myself that it could be from an ambulance. Then I thought that it probably wasn't, and that I was just freaking out a bit. The wait at the light was excruciating. Finally the light changed and as I approached daycare I saw an ambulance and a fire truck. I thought I was going to throw up.

I quickly parked my car (almost hitting another in the process) and ran to the ambulance. They had been waiting for me and ushered me in. If it were not for the clothes I had dressed him in earlier that morning, I would not have recognized him. His poor little face was extremely swollen. His lips and ears were 5X the normal size. He was covered head to toe in puffy, red welts. He was screaming and trying to scratch his face. I held him and he calmed down a bit. They gave him a shot of benadryl in his thigh. He was not a fan.

The firefighters got his carseat from my car and they installed it on the gurney in the ambulance. We rode to the hospital in the ambulance. I held his little hand the whole way. I was trying so hard not to cry because I didn't want to upset him further.

When we got to the hospital they took one look at him and quickly gave him an IV. He was not a fan. They gave him steriods, more benadryl and zyrtec through the IV. We waited there for a few hours for everything to clear up. Which it did, thank God.

We were sent home with a bunch of prescriptions and two epi pens. We have no idea what caused the reaction. He didn't have anything new to eat. We have an appointment tomorrow with the pedi to talk about allergy testing. Not knowing what caused it makes it so much more scary. I really hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the T&Ps earlier ladies. It means a lot to me.

  • Oh my!  How scary.  Could one of the other kids at daycare have "shared" something to eat with him and the DC provider didnt notice?  Or does he pick up stuff off the ground and put it in his mouth?

I am sure you have thought of all these things.  I hope you can figure out what he allergic to.

Will you be meeting with an allergist to find out the cause? I'm surprised your daycare didn't call and tell you they called 911.

He puts everything in his mouth. It is supposed to be a peanut and tree nut free facility, but I don't really believe them. I am going to talk to the ladies tomorrow and see if there was anything around that morning that he could have come in to contact with.

  • Oh wow - so sorry you had to go through that. I hope they figure out why it happened - poor guy and mama! Hugs.
  • I'm so glad he's ok now.

Was he playing outside at all?  Maybe he was stung by a bee?

I wish they would have warned me so that I would have been expecting it. THat was so terrible to see - knowing it was for my baby.

I also wonder why the hell they didn't have any benadryl in the facility.

I hope the pedi gives us a referral to an allergist. Not knowing is going to make me crazy.

I thought about this too - I will ask them tomorrow. They didn't mention if he went outside or not. His left side was much more swollen then his right, so I think an insect sting could make sense.

  • I'm so glad he's ok!

    ::hugs::

I hope you're able to figure out what caused it!
