Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Follow up to post last week...any ideas...DESPERATE!

Hi Ladies,

I wrote last week about my 5 month old daughter that is still up ALL NIGHT LONG...ranging from every 45 minutes to our longest 2 hour stretch.  At this point, it is killing me.  Someone suggested the EASY method during the day, instead of feeding on demand, and that has worked great. She can go to sleep for set naps on her own, and not on the breast, etc.

Unfortunately, this has not translated into nighttime.  I put her down in her crib, swaddled, a little elevated, and awake.  She goes right to sleep for the first stretch of the night.  HOWEVER, she wakes up 2 hours later, and from that point on, it is nuts.  She wants to nurse ever hour after that for the entire night.  I have tried letting her cry, which then turns into ear peircing screams...I can't do it.  I have tried that for up to 20 minutes.  What else can I do?  She will not take a bottle.  She will not take a pacifier.  I use white noise.  She is swaddled.  She is not gassy.  I do think she is teething, so I have treated that as needed...I just think she wakes, not b/c she is hungry, but b/c she wants to fall asleep on my breast. I am so desperate, so I am open to any suggestions you may have...Thanks so much!

Sorry Mama, I am no help - we are going through some major sleep issues, too... just wanted to say you're not alone, and hang in there!

Ugh!  Thanks, I guess it does help to know I'm not alone...but I am going cray too....I can barely keep up with my toddler during the day, and my baby at night!!  Hang in there...

  • does she eat enough during the day?  When i was on maternity leave and EBFing DD, she was up at night every 2 hrs.  Since I have been back at work and she has been bottle fed my expressed BM, it has been MUCH better.  DD is really tiny but once we got her up to 25 oz taken before bed, she started sleeping 7-8 hours straight.  It does suck to have to pump and feed if you don't need to, but it really worked for us...

Thanks so much for the idea, but I believe she eats enough...she eats approx every 3 hours during the day, and solids 2x/day....???   I think that is enough!?

  • sounds like enough but with BFing, she might just be a lazy eater and not actually getting enough milk?  My DD used to eat every 3 hours and had enough wet and dirty diapers so i was convinced that she was getting enough.  Then to get her used to a bottle, we started adding in one 4oz bottle of pumped milk before bed (given by DH).  That was the start of the better sleep habit...  Sorry you're going thru this.  It always seems to work out, I just hope it is soon for your sake!!  good luck!
