3rd Trimester

Anyone travel by plane in 33-34th weeks? RP from weekend

Dh and I won a 7 day trip to Maui but can only use it starting in June (or after LO is born).  It's a five hour flight for us.  My OB didn't say no if everything is going well in the pregnancy.

Just curious if any of you ladies traveled by airplane this late in the pregnancy? How did you do? What are some risks aside from blood clots etc?

Thanks :)

  • I would go! At 33 weeks with pregnant I flew lax to vt and it was fine (6hrs of flying.) Just walk around and drink lots of water on the flight! We looove Maui, and it would be more relaxing in all honesty w/o a baby:)  That is exciting that you won a free trip!

  • Congratulations! I traveled to the east coast and back, 2 x 3 hours (had to connect), when I was 30 weeks and lots of small one hour flights regularly until the end of 35 weeks. The worst thing was actually walking between the gates with my heavy work bag and standing in line for security, not so much the actual flights. One thing I noticed when looking into regulations is that airlines are a lot more generous than their reputation: you can fly with all the major airlines up until week 36 and even after that, they only require a note from your doctor stating you are healthy. My midwife was more restrictive, giving me until week 35 (so naughty me!).

There are no risks as such (apart from what you mention, but blood clots are always a risk when flying), but my advise is to get an aisle seat and drink *lots* of water. I got a bit dehydrated on my long trip and got many braxton hicks contractions that night. Being away from DH made this an unpleasant experience for me, but it seems as you will be with yours and on a relaxing trip :-)

The one problem is that you don't know how you will feel in terms of your pregnancy until you get closer to the actual traveling dates. I was fine and had no problems getting around all the way until week 37 but then 'heaviness' and sore legs hit and I would not have fun on a holiday now. Some people get to this stage earlier. It sounds wonderful with a holiday though, good luck on deciding :-)

  • Thanks ladies.  The trip wasn't actually free.  We won a charity auction but it was a good price and for a good cause

  • I personally would save it & go after LO is born

but GL with whatever you decide:)

  • I flew at 33 weeks and again at 35 weeks from Seoul to the US. It was a 12-13 hour flight.  I was uncomfortable during the last half and had a lot of swelling, but for a 5 hour flight I would do it!!!!!

OB was okay with me flying international up to 36 weeks. Just drink a lot of water and walk around!. Elevate your feet if you can!

  • I would go!  I flew up to 36 weeks with my first two PG's.  Flying while PG is a million times easier than traveling with kids (we fly on about 4-6 trips a year with the kids and have since the oldest was 8 weeks).  If someone told me I had to fly on a long flight to Hawaii while

    a) 34 weeks pg

    b) bringing a baby with me

    c) leaving little one at home while attending without the baby

I would choose A in a heartbeat.  Seriously!  Sounds great!
