What to do for a really red bottom?

My son has had diarrhea all weekend.  As a result of the constant diarrhea, his bottom is all red.  It's so sensitive that he won't even sit on the potty- and he loved going on the potty.  I've used Desitin but he says it hurts- I'm thinking it burns him because it's so raw down there.  Anyone go through this?  Any suggestions to ease the burn?

Also, I'm trying to let him eat only bananas, crackers, and rice and drinking water or pedialyte.  That's basically BRAT, right?  That's what they're supposed to have for diarrhea?

Thanks!

  • I have had really good luck with Butt Paste (I use the CVS brand but it's just as good.) Also if you can give him some "air time" to dry out it may help. And what you're giving him is basically the BRAT diet and that's what you give for diarrhea. Hope it clears up!

  • yes, BRAT diet is best. That's what I always do...

And for a raw bum, my pediatrician recommended the following, and it REALLY worked: wipe every poo with a warm wet washcloth - much easier on their skin than regular wipes (even the sensitive ones)..  then let dry (rub gently w/a dry wascloth).. then slather with plain petroleum jelly (Vaseline), then apply regular diaper rash cream (I used Desitin)... then sprinkle with baby powder (special kind w/talc, I believe)..

It's a lot of steps, but it truly was the only thing that helped him.

  • When my kids have gotten really raw bottoms I stick them in the tub a few times a day for a few minutes to soak in very luke warm water. I let their bottom air dry and I apply diaper cream directly to the diaper.

I really think keeping it clean and dry is the best thing to do. I DO NOT use wipes when they have a diaper rash and don't "wipe/rub" the skin. I pat it dry with a towel or air dry and let the skin breathe.

  • Thanks everyone.  I have plenty of vaseline and baby powder so we'll give that a try and I'll use a towel instead of wet wipes.

  • The BRAT diet is no longer recommended.

  • ditto using the washcloth instead of wipes. Let the area dry out before putting a diaper/underwear back on too. I highly reccommend calmoseptine ointment. It's sold in the pharmacy area at most grocery/drug stores. It's has a lot of uses but most people don't know it's a diaper cream also. It says it helps for diarrhea right on it.

It was rec by my pedi and it really works fast. It's sold in a tube and a tub form usually $4-7. It also gives a instant cooling sensation to relief the pain/burn of the rash.

Ditto pp about not using wipe -- they will sting on a raw bottom.  Use a wet washcloth or wet paper towels to gently clean and pat dry with a dry washcloth or towel.  Then I use triple butt paste and slather it on -- don't be stingy.  It has the protection element (zinc oxide), the drying element (cornstarch) plus an antacid (mylanta/maalox type stuff) to help keep the bottom from getting too red.  Works like a charm and it is what I always resort to when my kids have raw bottoms (and what the hospital mixed up for my neighbor for her DD's ground beef bottom).  Also, try baking soda baths -- just soak the tush in baking soda and water.  Also naked tush time is good too.  GL!!

Poor baby!? I say run don't walk to a Whole Foods and get some Earth mama angel baby bottom balm (the one for babies, not for mamas).? This stuff is organic, works great, and doesn't stick to the butt like zinc-based pastes.? Usually clears DD up in one application.? She actually asks for it "mommy put cream on it!" when her little bottom gets raw. ? ?HTH!
