Pregnant after a Loss

Dog product dangerous to me?

Hi, everyone.  We just got our second BFP yesterday.  (Hooray!)  Now my worries are beginning.

Our vet prescribed Promeris (it's like Frontline) for our dog.  Dh applied it on Wednesday night and then we put the dog right into his crate for the night.  I was careful not to touch the area, but I lightly brushed the spot the next day.  (He has long hair.)  It was a little sticky.

When prescribing it, the vet asked if we have little kids.  (No, unfortunately.)  She said she asked because Promeris is not safe for use around little kids.  Now I am worried about its effect on me.  She didn't say anything about pregnant women, and I didn't ask.

I googled it, and ads just say that it's not safe for use around pregnant women.

Anyone know more about this?  HOW unsafe???

TIA

  • Why not call and ask?

FWIW I have DH put on all the flea meds and avoid the area until dry.

  • As a vet, I would not use this particular product in pregnancy!  Amitraz is one of the more toxic chemicals - that's why some dogs can have mild lethargic spell after application, and why it is an excellent mite treatment (in most cases).  If you use gloves to apply and wait until it dries, than you are probably ok, but in my experience, this product may take a while to fully dry/absorb, and you have to be careful where you pet your dog, etc. while this is on.

I would mpt hesitate to use a lot of the other topicals prescribed by your vet, but Promeris (Amitraz) makes me nervous.

Papetvet uses this in her practice more than I do - so maybe she will stop by.

  • I do use it in practice quite a bit, but remind owners to put it on at night, crate the dog until morning (usually dry in 12 hours), and definitely not to touch the dog in that area until after absorption. I used to use it on my own Lab, but the lethargy was far more than mild with him, and I went back to Advantix and Frontline. If I have a free minute on Monday, I will call the product's tech support line to get a better answer for you. For now, I would agree with sinisterkat, and advise you to not apply or touch it (let DH do it).

Thank you.  I don't intend to use it again, but I would appreciate any info your might get.  I am hoping that I so early that the "baby" is still a ball of cells that don't share my bloodstream yet.

    Thanks again.
