Baby Names

Sheherazade...for a little white girl?

and call her Zade...

I know, I know,  It is almost too ridiculous, but I honestly love this name.

She was the women telling the stories in 1,001 Arabian Nights.  It has all the characteristics I love: A strong woman from literature: she is a storyteller, which I am really into...

But I can't can I?

I mean, she'll hate me and her name forever won't she?

But Zade is kinda cute.

What do you think?

Re: Sheherazade...for a little white girl?

  • I agree, I would hate it if my mom named be Sheherazade.  Why not stick with Zade?  Although, Zade definitely screams "boy" to me, if that would bother you.

This. I would stick with Zade but it sounds more like a boy name. Zada?

  • Use it as a mn if you have to use it at all.

Sorry to say this, but I really don't think you can.

Aren't there any other strong female literary characters that tell stories? How about Jo March from Little Women? It's very unique (for a girl name at least). But you could always go with Josephine. Or Louisa, after the author, on whom the character of Jo is loosely based.

I'm sure you could come up with some others that would suit your taste. Right?

  • Sheherazade is a little much for a little white girl.

I really have pushed for "Scout" from To Kill a Mockingbird for a middle name...but DH will not have it!

  • Scout is cute. Zade is cute. Or Zadie like Sadie?

Shedherazade is a mouthful no matter what your race is.

I would say Josephine also. Jo was a story teller.

Wiki says that it is sometimes Scheherazadea...maybe Dea? (Day-ah)

(Says the girl who secretly love love LOVES the name Scheherazade.)

  • Don't do it.

  • I think you're intending to pronounce Zade as Za-dee, right? In that case I'd spell it Zadie and what about just using Zadie instead of Sheherazade if you're uncomfortable with it....

Oh good question. Zade as in Scheherazade ends in Zod...not Zad-ee.

  • Don't do it! A.  I'm not even sure that I am pronouncing it properly

                      B.  I just don't like it, especially for a girl.  Zade sounds boyish

  • The meaning behind it is neat but I would only use it as a middle name.  Unfortunately when people meet your daughter they most likely won't know the connection to 1,001 Arabian Nights and may think that it is ridiculous.
  • Good Lord...no way!

    Please don't

    Sheherazade = Crying

  • I am all for creative, meaningful names.....but sweet Jesus, please don't do it!!!  I'm not even sure how you pronounce it.

    Shah-Hera-Zod

  • I totally thought this was a joke when I opened it but you are actually serious.  Please no...and Zade sounds like a boys name.  Zadie sounds like a twist on Sadie.  It's all wrong.
  • If u love the name that much use it for the mn , not for the fn, it's just confusing. Or like some of the other ladies suggested cut it down to Zade or Zadie.

    Kneel before Zod!

Heck, now I want to name my kid that.

  • I like Zade for a boy not a girl. She will hate you for naming her Sheherazade. Please don't do this to your child!

  • I know a Scheherazade.  And yes, she's white.  She goes by Sheri.
  • You DOOOOO???!!!!

Oh, wow!  Does she like it?

Thank you for all the posts.

I wasn't seriously considering it, because I have a feeling that it would really just be a form of psychological torture, but I really do like the name.  I'm telling you, I am just ahead of my time.

Then again, I also really like Sacajawea.

Of course there are strong female protagonists out there that I like: Scarlett (if I am feeling feisty), Scout (a little unusual), Anne (of Green Gables--or Miranda for that matter).  There are others I am just not thinking of.

I just really like the name Sheherazade...

Too bad it is a fist magnet.

Actually I was thinking "Zaid", like rhymes with braid.  I know that's not how you pronounce the end of Sheherazade, but that's okay.

Not that I could ever actually use this name at all.  :(

  • That name is too much for any little girl, regardless of whether she is black, white, yellow or orange Stick out tongue. Just don't do it!

My thoughts exactly. I like PP's idea about finding a different name from literature. Josephine is nice.
