Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How did your LO react the 1st time you gave them gripe water?

I gave DD gripe water for the 1st time today.  I gave her 1tsp at 1pm and she drank her bottle went to sleep until 4.  She woke up and I gave her another tsp.  I gave her her bottle and she only drank less than an oz.  I held her and she fell asleep.  I put her in her bouncy seat and she has been sleeping since - for like an hour and a half now.  This isnt like her - she normally at least drinks 3 oz every 3-4 hrs.

Did your LO act strange after you gave it to her the first few times?  Im hoping I didnt give her too much or that she isnt having some sort of weird reaction to it.  I know I'm probably overreacting but Im a first time Mommy so everything worrys me. TIA!!

  • DS spit it up both times I've tried.  He also does this with vitamins.  He does keep mylicon down, thankfully.

  • We give ds 1/2 a tsp when he needs it. he generally goes to sleep after. He loves the taste (he loves the taste of his vitamin D as well)
  • what is gripe water?

  • He seems to like it. I had been giving it to him after a feeding only when he appeared to have signs of colic. He was still screaming like mad. A few hours ago I gave it to him before feeding him and he ate less as well. But he slept well for the first time in days and has not stopped farting.

  • My DS tends to sleep better when he's had some too. I haven't noticed a change in his eating, but he's not very consistent with that anyway. Sometimes he'll nurse for 10 minutes, sometimes 25.

  • It is normal for babies to fall asleep and sleep well after the gripe water. The natural ingredients are made to calm the tummy of a baby, and that helps them sleep. Especially if they have been not feeling well (reason to give the gw in the first place)
  • We tried it in her bottles last night and she had a bad night - didn't settled down after feeding for like 45 minutes, which is not like her at all.  We felt it made things worse...  I don't think we'll try it again.

This. It causes DS to calm down and fall asleep quickly.

I only give it if he needs it though. He generally gets it in the morning and in the evening. Most days only at bedtime though.
