Pro-choice does not mean YOU would choose to have an abortion or not have one. It means that you leave the decision up to the mother, and that it should be a legal option that can legally be performed safely in a doctor's office.
Pro-life means that you do not support legalized abortions and think they should not be an option for ANYONE. (Except sometimes in the case of when it is medically necessaryto save the mother's life.)
Re: Why do we keep having to clarify this?
I said this in the thread...but I hate both terms. I do not think they are accurate. Just because somebody thinks abortion should be legal doesnt make them anti-life. Conversely if somebody beleives abortion should not be legal they arent against choice...
I think the terms themselves are polarizing...
I say anti legalizing abortion...or pro legalizing abortion.
br
this.
I agree mostly, but how is someone who doesn't believe abortion should be legal not against choice?
Abortion is legal now. People have a choice now. If you want to take it away you can label yourself either anti-choice or pro-life and people will get the point. No one really cares what you would do yourself in that situation the debate is about what you believe society should do.
Well then take away the "ing" and people could just say pro legal abortion or anti legal abortion
br
I think the choice comes into play earlier in the game the vast majority of the time. And I am for the father getting a choice also.
br
Ah, it's the old "you made a choice to open your legs!" argument.
Yup.
br
You are aware that not every person participated in the "decision" to become pregnant right?
br
We don't.
You have no idea what you would do in that situation. Please.
x 1000000000000000000000000000000000000
then maybe they shouldn't be having sex. it's no secret that no matter what precautions are being taken, there is still chance of getting pregnant.
I'd love to see you tell that to a rape victim....
Do you know one?
And you have no idea the life I have lived....
However what I was saying was legally for all people I am still anti-abortion...flame away
br
Why?
also, we have family friends whose daughter was raped by her college roommate's brother.
she got pregnant.
she had the baby. she finished college with her parents' support (they helped watch her daughter for her). that little girl is the love of her life. last i knew, the little girl did not know who her daddy was/how she came to be. i would hate to have to explain that to the little girl, but it's better to have to explain it than to not have to.
plus, you could make an adoption plan. even if you have the abortion, you will remember that you got pregnant from the rapist.
Just seems like you would if you said "I'd love to see you tell that to a rape victim...." . Most people would have a story behind it, of a friend or something who went through that situation. I know 3 women who had to make a choice.
my best friend was raped, and did the right thing and went directly to the hospital like you are supposed to do. they gave her the plan b pill to be taken immediately. i just think there are other options, even if somebody is to get pregnant from being raped, that baby could be given to a couple that can't physically have kids.
It doesn't matter, does it? Yes, I know people who have been raped. Regardless I believe no one should be made to carry, deliver, and possibly keep a child they don't want, esp if it was made that way. I can't imagine having to carry a child (even if you are giving it up for adoption) from a rape. And that wasn't the point of me saying what I did. She said that getting pregnant is a choice and that even if you use BC it can fail and you should be prepared. I'm just saying those aren't the only ways to get pregnant and sometimes, no, you have NO SAY in the "decision" to get pregnant.
I didn't want to comment on this but now I can't help it. Maybe some rape victims fear for their safety and take a few days to get help!!
Now hile I am at it - I don't understand how many people who claim to be pro-life also support the death penalty. Doesn't their head explode for the contradiction of it all? And don't say only guilty people get the death penalty because that is not true - innocent people are killed that way.
I feel for raped victims, I really do. It hits very close to home, more than any of you can even know. But I just think if the proper precautions are taken afterwards it can avoid killing an innocent child.
I'm pro-life and anti-death penalty. It's against my beliefs and relationship with GOD to kill HIS innocents or the people HE loves who have sinned against HIM. HE doesn't want any of HIS people to die by the hands of another human being. HE forgives, and HE grieves.
Ah, the old "i'm pro-choice so I'm better than you" claim.
I'm not anit-choice. I just wonder why the baby doesn't get a say.
And FWIW, approximately 1% of abortions are performed in cases of rape or incest. So, let's just take that off the table. It's virtually moot on BOTH sides of the argument. (you don't have to like my "source", and I concede,it's an old one, but the study itself was done by Planned Parenthood and I am not advocating this site, necessarily, for more than just referencing this statistic--it's the only place I could find it online in a pinch.)
I'm not saying I'm better, I am saying give it another name because I'm pro-life too.
How is calling it "anti-choice" a better name? I don't understand what you mean, then. How can you be pro-life and not "anti-choice" at the same time?
I am not anti choice...But I think the father deserves the right to make a choice as well. What if he is willing and able to parent...??
I am mom to a child I carried and one I did not. My love and emotion for them is no different.
A fathers love is no different however he gets no choice.
br
The father's health isn't threatened by being pregnant. Its not his body. Being pregnant puts women at risk for conditions like pre-e, GD and oh that number one killer of pregnant women- DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
I am joining the group of people who prefer to call it anti-choice, rather than pro-life. I guess it is just semantics and politics.
There are simply no words for how stupid and naive this post is. Truly.
Do you get extra god points for every time you capitalize a pronoun?
The right thing? Really? You know what the right thing to do after being raped is?
That is not the first thing you think of after you are sexually assaulted. Not even close. You think, "I want to boil my skin off. I want to die."
I sure as hell wasn't thinking, "Man, if I am pregnant, I will carry this reminder for nine months and then give it up." No, my preteen self was not thinking that.
The right thing. Wow.
