Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is there a "phase" at 8 months?

DS has always been a pretty laid back baby, not much of a crier since his newborn days. Lately, though, he is very crabby and fussy. I literally have to hold from the time I pick him up from daycare until he goes to bed. He cries when I feed him solids, when I put him in his jumperoo, pretty much anywhere but in my arms. He literally has meltdowns where his whole face gets red and he screams at the top of his lungs.

He is not sick, no temp or anything like that. Just super irritable and fussy. He's been like this for a while so I don't think it's teething.

I remember a link someone had (I think on this board) showing that baby's moods often correspond with major developmental milestones. Does anyone know if there is a big developmental change in an 8-month old? Is this happening to any of your LOs?

  • No, my baby has been this way since birth. Are you sure he's napping enough at daycare? I notice ds is worse if he's tired.

He's a terrible napper at daycare. Hmm, maybe he is chronically overtired.

  • YES! i think that may have been me that posted that link...i have no idea if it's true or if this research is valid, but here's a clip:

The "8-month sleep regression" (which for some babies is closer to a 9-month sleep regression) is related to the 37-week spurt. For some reason that one just seems to cause more waking, too, than some of the other spurts do. It might also be particularly hard because many babies are smack in the middle of working on crawling or walking, and also teething. (At Casa Moxie we've had probably 8 weeks of crappy sleep between teething, the 37-week spurt, crawling, teething, and now pulling up. Every now and then he'll have an easy night, but boy is it rough being a 9-month-old.)

Also, around 8 months is peak time for separation anxiety, whcih is exactly what my LO is going through. Must be held, whines when you disappear from his sight, hates eating or being in his high chair. That, along with teething, along with probably learning to crawl or scoot around, along with major developmental leaps...definitely sounds familiar!! Hang in there mama!

Alex just started this. I havent figured out what is it yet.

  • We are going through the same thing the last few days and it is awful!  Just sitting next to her isn't enough, she has to be in my arms all.day.long except for during naps.  I'm so worn out.

I think it's teething because she is chewing like crazy but who knows.  I'm just ready for my independent player to come back!

    This is us, too.  :(

  • Uggghhh. I dont know but I have been dealing with this and terrible sleeping for about a week now. I think she is teething and yesterday she learned to pull herself up to sitting position...so maybe that is part of it. She also is going through separation anxiety.
  • Yep, us too. Our normally happy baby is quite the pistol lately. She gets very frustrated with wanting to crawl and walk that it just eats away at her happy mood.

Very helpful to read there's a reason for it! Thank you!
